Under the direction of the Transplant Coordinator, the Donor Allocation Specialist assists in taking call for all organ transplant programs. This job includes assisting in the review of deceased donor organ offers when organs become available to transplant candidates, assisting in triaging patient calls for the transplant programs and other duties as assigned by the Transplant Coordinator and Donor Allocation Managers. The specialist assists in the facilitation of the acceptance or refusal of donor organs for transplant and helps coordinate the organ recovery with the transplant surgeons, Organ and Tissue Donation Team, Histocompatibility lab, as well as supports communication with patients receiving the organs. The specialist works closely with the Transplant Coordinator to ensure organ recovery and placement of all organs. The specialist provides 24/7 coverage on a rotating schedule including nights, weekends and holidays and is a home-based position that may require on campus meetings and trainings as determined by the Donor Allocation Managers.
Essential Duties:
- Assists in the review of deceased donor organ offers when organs become available to transplant candidates in all organ programs.
- Assists in the facilitation of acceptance or refusal of donor organs for transplant and helps to coordinate the organ recovery with the transplant surgeons, Organ and Tissue Donation Team, Histocompatibility lab, as well as supports communicates with patients receiving the organs
- Contributes support pertaining to all aspects of organ recovery and placement including but not limited to: arranging for transport of surgeons, calling admission, OR and other pertinent hospital departments and communication with various OPO staff as directed by Transplant Coordinator.
- Maintains composure and professional communication in all interactions with surgeons, potential recipients, Organ and Tissue Donation Staff, donor hospital staff and the staff at Keck Medical Center of USC.
- Assists the Transplant Coordinator in triaging patient calls after hours and escalates calls to the on-call registered nurse or physician when appropriate
- Demonstrates sound knowledge base of UNOS policy and CMS regulatory requirements in relation to organ allocation, waitlist management as well as ongoing patient status updating.
- Participates in UNOS responsibilities (listing, delisting, disease transmission reporting, donor culture reports management, status updates for all solid organs, etc), and assists wait list management team as needed under supervision of RN.
- Knowledge of computer software is required to operate within the program’s local network, utilizing the Cerner platform and UNOS platform.
- Assists in entering and obtaining information in the potential recipient’s chart, and accessing the UNOS database for transplant donors.
- Participates in 24/7 on call coverage on a rotating schedule, including nights, weekends and holidays.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Req High school or equivalent
- Req 1 year Experience in the medical field including but not limited to medical office, hospital setting, volunteer work.
- Req Demonstrate excellent customer service behavior.
- Req Demonstrates ability to effectively work with physicians, staff, and patients.
- Req Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Pref Associate's degree Degree in a related field
- Pref Clinical experience in the organ donation and transplant field
- Pref Emergency Medical Technician Preferred Certification: Respiratory Therapist or Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (must maintain valid if certified).
Required Licenses/Certifications:
- Req Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
- Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)
The hourly rate range for this position is $39.00 - $63.95.
