Job Abstract

The Community Services Department is seeking to fill several Child Care Counselor positions. Both Part-time Hourly and Part-time Regular schedules are available:

• Part-time Hourly - Work hours will not exceed 19 hours a week.
• Part-time Regular - Work hours will be 25 hours or more per week. Schedule will be Monday - Friday, 12pm - 6pm and may include some evening and weekends as needed for special events and facility coverage. (Position eligible to receive health retirement benefits.)

This recruitment will be accepting applications for multiple vacancies, and will remain open on a continuous basis until the needs of the department are met. This recruitment may close at any time. All part-time, temporary, and seasonal workers are at-will employees.

Examples of Essential Duties:Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Supervise elementary school children ages 4 -13 years old; maintain attendance records.
• Plan and implement daily activity plans.
• Prepare and serve snacks; monitor lunchtime activities.
• Chaperone off-site field trips.
• Maintain a clean and safe environment.
• Monitor and inventory supplies and equipment.
• Depending upon assignment, may draft and edit scripts for musical productions or coordinate sports and games.
• Provide homework assistance.
• Facilitates parent communication and response to concerns
• Assist new or existing staff in learning departmental practices and protocols, methods and procedures.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Foster an environment that embraces diversity, integrity, trust, and respect.
• Be an integral team player, which involves flexibility, cooperation, and communication.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Experience and Training Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

• Experience: One year of responsible experience in recreation or child development.
• Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by 6 units of college coursework in Early Childhood Education, Child Development or a related field or any combination of these.

Knowledge of:

• Principles and techniques of child development.
• Methods of instruction in theater, art, music, dance or sports.

• Plan, organize, and lead age-appropriate activities.
• Prepare lesson plans for children ages 4-13.
• Use sound judgment in recognizing scope of authority.
• Operate and use modern office equipment including computers and applicable software.
• Maintain regular attendance and adhere to prescribed work schedule to conduct job responsibilities.
• Utilize appropriate safety procedures and practices for assigned duties.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
