The nurse scientist is a nurse with advanced preparation in research principles and methodology. The nurse scientist has a strong foundation in scientific inquiry with a focus on clinically relevant areas for scholarship and research. The nurse scientist will facilitate the conduct of research among nurses to further their professional development while advancing nursing science and scholarship to improve patient outcomes and care.
Essential Duties:
- 1. Cultivates a climate of clinical inquiry.
- 2. Assesses system barriers and facilitators to the conduct of research.
- 3. Participates in the conduct of research.
- 4. Designs programs of research relevant to clinical nursing practice.
- 5. Promotes a nursing-focused research agenda for evidence that is needed for populations, units, departments, programs, or the healthcare system.
- 6. Analyzes research and non-research evidence for gaps in knowledge and practice.
- 7. Prioritizes research relevant to clinical nursing practice
- 8. Provides leadership in the design, implementation, and evaluation of research.
- 9. Mentors nurses in the conduct of research, and dissemination of findings.
- 10. Mentors nurses to prepare abstracts and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and poster or podium presentations at conferences.
- 11. Actively engages with the institutional review board to implement research strategies and protect human subjects.
- 12. Provides leadership in the conduct of research, including identification of questions for clinical inquiry, conduct of literature reviews, study design and implementation, data collection, data analysis, and dissemination of findings.
- 13. Identifies areas of inquiry relevant to the patient populations served by the organization.
- 14. Reviews evidence for research gaps within populations, specialties, or healthcare delivery systems.
- 15. Designs research studies following appropriate quantitative and qualitative methodologies.
- 16. Applies ethical principles in safeguarding the confidentiality, dignity, and safety of research participants.
- 17. Uses and advocates for use of data collection methods that are understandable and appropriate.
- 18. Analyzes data independently or collaboratively with other scientists or statisticians.
- 19. Disseminates research findings internally within the organization and/or externally through national, state, or local professional organizations.
- 20. Contributes to the overall health sciences literature through preparation and submission of manuscripts for publication.
- 21. Builds and maintains collaborative professional relationships with hospital and medical staff.
- 22. Actively participates on the Nursing Research and Evidence-based Practice shared governance council and mentors council members.
- 23. Establishes research/EBP goals and initiatives aligned with the nursing and hospital strategic plan.
- 24. Participates in continuing education opportunities to continue their professional development through membership in professional organizations. Publications and presentations.
- 25. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Doctorate Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) OR
- Doctorate Doctor of Nursing Science (DNS or DNSc.)
- 5 years 5 years clinical nursing experience required. (2 of the 5 years preferably in acute care nursing experience).
- Demonstrates ability to effectively work with physicians, staff, and patients.
- Demonstrates ability to utilize effective, appropriate and diplomatic oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrates ability to work independently with minimal direction and supervision.
- Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office as well as Internet and access and utilization.
- Ability to lead and participate in research
Preferred Qualifications:
Required Licenses/Certifications:
- Registered Nurse - RN (CA Board of Registered Nursing) Valid California Registered Nurse License
- Certification - Job Relevant Professional certification. If no certification upon hire, one must obtain within 12 months of hire, and maintain renewal.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
- Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)
The annual base salary range for this position is $95,680.00 - $158,230.00 USD.
