Job Summary
This histologist position will assist with the operation of the research histology laboratory, including specimen processing, embedding, cutting, and staining tissues, both paraffin and frozen. This position helps with the maintenance of lab supplies and equipment and provides inexperienced histology users with basic information about specimen preparation, staining methods, and staining interpretation. Most importantly, it provides essential backup, keeping the research histology service running when our senior histologist is absent.

The Research Specialist II, will performs a variety of laboratory activities independently with minimal supervision at a moderate to high scientific complexity level and functions as a key support to the operations and research customers. Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates a consistent understanding of protocols and guiding principles, and applies the protocols to experiments.
- Conducts, evaluates experiments, assays, and/or other laboratory activities, and is assigned projects of moderate complexities. May work with more senior mentor to learn and train on higher complexity activities.
- Calculates, compiles, and communicates results to the Core leadership or internal customer.
- Performs quality assurance on all assigned activities per procedures or SOPs.
- Performs intake functions for the laboratory such as logging of samples and service requests, and the dissemination of basic information to users (i.e., minimum requirements for services, costs, etc.).Records work accurately and completely.
- Maintains established laboratory inventories, ordering materials as necessary.
- Prepares and operates equipment for experiments, assays, measurements, etc.
- May perform maintenance and minor equipment repairs, according to manufacturer and Core guidelines. Cleans and performs general maintenance on equipment, according to established protocols.
- Executes and facilitates delivery of specialized services.
- Interacts with primarily with Core personnel but may have increasing interaction with Core users.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education:
- Associate's degree in a relevant scientific field required.
- Bachelor's Degree may substitute for two years of experience.
- Four years of directly related experience may substitute for the degree requirements.
Languages:
Certifications:
- Certification in appropriate field may be required per department or core protocol within one year of hire.
Complexity of Work:
- Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
Work Experience:
- Two years of experience required.
Physical Requirements:
- May be exposed to hazardous biological, vaporous and odorous materials
- Manual and visual dexterity required.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Continuous lifting, standing and walking.
