THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
The City of Baldwin Park is looking for a well-rounded, skilled Equipment Mechanic who will be able to perform semi-skilled maintenance and repairs on a variety of light-duty, heavy-duty, and emergency services vehicles. The ideal candidate will possess strong customer service and interpersonal skills in order to work efficiently and effectively with all City Departments, employees, and service providers. The incumbent should be self-motivated, take initiative, and work well as part of a team-oriented department.

THE POSITION:

Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of a variety of automotive and mechanical equipment; performs related duties as required or assigned.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Inspects motorized and mechanical equipment.

• Diagnoses trouble and determines extent of and performs necessary repairs; overhauls, repairs, adjusts, tunes up, installs engines, transmissions, differentials, and clutches.
• Refaces, reseats, and adjusts valves; replaces, fits and adjusts pistons, rings and bearings; cleans, repairs, rebuilds and replaces fuel injection systems, carburetors, fuel pumps, strainers, fuel lines, gasoline tanks and gauges.
• Wires and reconditions electrical systems; tests and repairs starting and charging systems; recharges batteries; repairs and replaces components such as generators, alternators, regulators, distributors, relays, lights and switches.
• Relines and adjusts brakes; diagnoses and repairs hydraulic and air braking systems, diagnoses and repairs cooling systems, including radiators, water pumps, hoses and other related components.
• Repairs or replaces axles, aligns wheels, welds, rivets and cuts metal; uses engine analyzer to test engine condition and diagnose problems, prepares and maintains records of equipment maintenance and repair costs.
• Requisitions and stores needed supplies, parts, tools and equipment; assists other staff as needed.
• Supports the relationship between the City of Baldwin Park and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Tools, equipment, techniques and procedures used in the overhauling, repair and adjustment of automotive and other heavy motorized equipment, including the operation and care of gasoline, diesel, CNG, propane, and hybrid internal combustion engines, state emission control standards and devices; repair and maintenance of construction equipment. Knowledge of and ability to follow standard safety precautions to ensure safe use and maintenance of equipment.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to make mechanical repairs to a wide variety of motor equipment; accurately diagnose and correct faulty operating and mechanical troubles; maintain accurate time and material reports; prepare and submit reports on preventive maintenance programs and overall shop accomplishments; organize, direct, and supervise a variety of maintenance, repair and servicing operations; follow oral and written instructions. Ability to travel to different sites and locations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Graduation from High School or GED equivalent, supplemented by mechanical trade courses AND;
• Twp (2) years of journey level experience as an equipment or automotive mechanic.
• Experience in medium duty truck is highly desirable.

Possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position involves the ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 50+ lbs. on a continuous basis; exposure to heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, mechanical and electrical equipment. May require working from ladders, scaffolding and lifts to heights necessary to repair and service vehicles and other equipment. Ability to work flexible hours, weekends, and/or holidays.
