Job Summary
Basic Function/Definition
The incumbent will interpret and/or translate educational and general information exchanged primarily in the educational setting by using manual and oral methods of communication for D/deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) students and/or faculty and hearing parties. This is a continuous recruitment to fill part-time, temporary, hourly assignments on an as-needed basis. Departments or divisions will refer to the pool of applicants on file to fill temporary assignments as needed. You will be contacted by the hiring manager should the department or division be interested in scheduling an interview. This position may perform work in any of the following departments: Communications & Languages and Disabled Students Programs & Services (DSPS).
Essential Duties
Examples of Duties:
Attend classes lectures, workshops, meetings, and other events as needed with DHH students or faculty to interpret/translate academic and non-academic information.
Attend classes, guidance sessions, tutoring sessions, and other student activities as needed with DHH students/faculty to interpret/translate academic and non academic information, classroom discussions, and activities as well as ancillary communication which support the college going experience through the use of manual and oral methods of communication
for the deaf. Continually assess a student’s communication skills in speech, speechreading, sign and fingerspelling in order to adapt effective communication methods based on student’s needs.
Promotes cross-cultural communication through an understanding of the Deaf culture.
Support full interaction and independence of DHH students.
Stays current in the field of professional interpreters (i.e., workshops, continuing education units, etc.)
Minimum Qualifications/Education and Experience
