Job Summary
Primary Responsibilities: The School Counselor provides social/emotional counseling to the student body, coordinates student wellness programming, and serves as the point person for parents, guardians, faculty, and administrators for any social, emotional, and/or mental health issues.
Counseling
·Provides short-term, solution-focused counseling services to students, and supports students and families by coordinating mental health resources and psychotherapy outside of school.
·Provides crisis intervention and risk assessment for triage and referral purposes.
·Teaches Health & Wellness (Human Development), SEL & Sex Education in each grade level in collaboration with classroom and Religious Studies teachers, leads small SEL groups, conflict resolution check-ins with students, and provides support as needed per class.
·Supports the Scope and Sequence for Health & Wellness, SEL & Sex Education
·Works closely with the Dean of Student Affairs & Wellness and Student Support Team to identify and support any at-risk students.
·Supports Faculty with best practices regarding student’s needs.
·Serves as a member of the Student Support Team.
·Remains current on relevant professional development. Current in law & ethics, mandated reporting, and risk assessment.
·Recommends, in close partnership with the Dean of Student Affairs & Wellness and Learning Specialist, full neuropsychological reports, therapy, or medication management.
·Remains current with Laws governing confidentiality as they pertain to student and mental health services in independent schools.
·Maintains and updates digital confidential records kept privately & documents records of conversations, and observations.
·Participates on Safety Committee & crisis management teams.
·Helps coordinate and support guest speakers on student wellness.
·Provides counseling around mental health diagnoses with students, families, and faculty.
·Files and follows court orders and offers any follow-up needed from outside support services.
·Remains active in Los Angeles Private School Counseling cohort and meetings.
Student Life
Engages fully in co-curricular activities and in the extra-curricular life of the school, to be known and trusted as a supportive adult on campus.
Leads Peer Counseling Program.
Facilitates constructive dialogue between students to resolve conflict.
In collaboration with the Dean of Student Affairs & Wellness and Admissions, coordinates the BSBW program.
Supports dances, graduation, and retreats.
Parent Connections
Consults with parents to provide guidance and resources to support the social and emotional needs of their daughters.
Attends and participates in meetings with parents, Dean of Student Affairs & Wellness, Academic Dean, Learning Specialist, teachers, and outside student support such as therapists, educational psychologists, doctors, etc.
In partnership with the administration, supports the continuing education of Marymount parents. (i.e. meetings, the facilitation of parenting groups, recommendations of appropriate books, speakers, and workshops).
Maintains a robust webpage (behind the password) on the Marymount website that includes pertinent information and valuable resources for parent & Faculty support.
Faculty Connections
Leads and facilitates student wellness-focused components of faculty meetings and/or student support meetings.
Consult with teachers regarding students’ social and emotional needs.
Offers professional development to faculty during department/faculty/staff meetings.
Works with the Dean of Student Affairs & Wellness, Grade Level Coordinators, and Advisors to develop appropriate social and emotional learning tools and incorporate them into the existing curriculum.
Consults with the Dean of Student Affairs & Wellness and Faculty regarding clinical, ethical, and legal matters about the mental health of students.
Consults with the Learning Specialist regarding students of concern.
Meets weekly with the Dean of Student Affairs & Wellness and Learning Specialist as the Student Support Services Team to discuss and strategize about students of concern.
Offers mediation and conflict resolution as needed between students, faculty, and families.
Requirements
Requirements:
·Master’s Degree in Counseling, LMFT, LCSW or LPCC
·Minimum of 5 years experience, preferably working in a high school environment
Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
