The City of Bell Gardens is seeking highly motivated and public service-oriented individuals for the positions of Lifeguard , Senior Lifeguard and Aquatics Instructor.

RECREATION & COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT
The City of Bell Gardens Recreation & Community Services Department's vision is to create community through people, parks, and programs. Our focus is to provide a safe and fun learning environment for the residents of Bell Gardens to enjoy. Our department is led by a diverse and knowledgeable staff that truly loves recreation and giving back to the community they serve.
SCHEDULE: This is a recurrent, part-time, as needed position. Hours may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
Must be at least 16 years of age or older at the time of application and in the eleventh grade or higher. All students under the age of 18, who have not completed his/her high school graduation requirement must submit a valid Work Permit.
Examples of Essential Functions
LIFEGUARD ($17.53 per hour)
MINIMUM & DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: - One or more seasons of experience as a lifeguard or swim instructor is desirable.
Experience working with children of all ages in a group setting is preferred.
Some direct experience in leadership, volunteer work, or recreation activities is highly desirable.
LICENSE(S) AND CERTIFICATE(S): The City will offer certification and re-certification training. Possession of the following current certificates at time of appointment: Red Cross First Aid (either multi-media, standard, or advanced); Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR; and Red Cross Lifeguard Training at time of hire.
NOTE: Applicants must provide copies of current certifications or provide documentation that they are currently enrolled in a Lifeguard Training Course.
DUTIES: Under general supervision, provides for the safety of persons using the City swimming pool and related areas; to aid persons in danger; enforce pool safety rules and regulations; Monitor swimming and other pool activities; Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning; Apply cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid; Inspect swimming pool for cleanliness and perform routine maintenance; Keep a daily log of rescues and other emergencies and prepare written reports of these activities; Assist in teaching swimming techniques and perform related work as required.
AQUATICS INSTRUCTOR / SENIOR LIFEGUARD ($18.40 - $20.29 per hour)
MINIMUM & DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Experience working with children of all ages in a group setting is preferred.

Possession of the following current certificates at time of appointment: Red Cross First Aid (either multi-media, standard, or advanced); Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR; Red Cross Lifeguard Training; and a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certificate at time of appointment. American Red Cross Title 22 First Aid for Public Safety Personnel is desired.
NOTE: Applicants must provide copies of current certifications or provide documentation that they are currently enrolled in a Lifeguard Training Course.
DUTIES: Under general supervision, provides for the safety of persons using the City swimming pool and related areas; to aid persons in danger; Perform lifeguard duties; Teach swimming techniques, diving, water polo, and competitive swimming; May coach the swim team and officiate at swim meets.
Minimum & Desirable Qualifications
OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must have knowledge of: lifesaving techniques, principles and practices; policies, rules and regulations governing conduct and safety of persons using the pool; first-aid principles and practices; methods, materials and equipment involved in maintenance and operation of swimming pools. Must have ability to: rescue drowning swimmers and administer artificial respiration and first aid; supervise conduct of pool patrons and maintain order in a tactful manner; use life lines, rings and other safety equipment; follow written and oral instructions; and maintain accurate records. Must have skill in: reading and writing and maintaining and cleaning pools. Establish and maintain effective and cooperative relationships; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; team oriented; skilled in First Aid and CPR. The ability to speak Spanish is highly desirable.
