Job Abstract

The counselor supports students in developing their academic and social skills to succeed both on and off campus. Students are guided through the necessary steps to be competitive toward their postsecondary goals and build the foundation for a successful and productive life. This position is under the supervision of the Vice President of Counseling Operations.

The role of the counselor includes duties and responsibilities in the following areas:

Academic

• Counsel students on their course selection, develop a four-year plan, and monitor student academic progress.
• Conference with teachers, parents, and students to implement academic plans to ensure students are on track for graduation and competitive towards their post-high school goals.
• Meet with students earning a C- or below every Mandatory Academic Support period (every three weeks), refer students for appropriate assistance, and contact parents regarding the meeting.
• Resolve any academic issues under the approval of the Assistant Principal and VP of Counseling Operations.
• Submit postings for the Parent Newsletter, Parent Weekly Bulletin, and counselor resource publications.
• Gather college matriculation data from seniors for the graduation program.

• The assigned testing coordinator is responsible for implementing the standardized testing program, including National Testing Day, SAT, and/or ACT. Duties include coordinating the test materials, arranging testing times and locations, training proctors, and managing test score reports.

College and Career

• Counsel students one-on-one to explore their postsecondary options based on the student’s interests and goals.
• Provide college counseling, scholarship, and financial aid information, as well as career information.
• Assist students in building a well-balanced and best-fit college list of safety, target, and reach schools.
• Guide students in developing their college essays through brainstorming, drafting, and proofreading until the final version.
• Help students write a detailed resume for college admission or job applications.
• Work with students to fill out college, financial aid, job, and scholarship applications completely and competitively (CSU, UC, Common Application, FAFSA, CSS Profile, etc).
• Write letters of recommendation and submit required documents such as the school report and transcript to college and scholarship programs.
• Assist with developing and coordinating college counseling programs including ACT/SAT test preparation, college tours, and parent/student nights.
• Serve as the assigned point lead for program events, including but not limited to the Parent College Nights, Cash for College, College Application Workshop, Summer College Writing Workshop, College Forum, college tours, and Coffee with the Counselors. The point lead is responsible for booking, organizing, and implementing the program from start to finish.
• Serve as support for all programs within the counseling department to ensure their successful implementation and growth.
• Maintain the environment of the Counseling Center with updated materials on college admission, testing preparation, and enrichment opportunities.
• Responsible for collecting, tracking, and compiling data to analyze the counseling services offered and their outcomes.

Social-Emotional

• Counsel at-risk students in non-crisis and crisis situations.
• Consult and collaborate with administrators and fellow counselors to assess and intervene with students in immediate crisis.
• Knowledge and experience to augment the mental health curriculum through programs, guest speakers, workshops, etc.
• Collaborate with and provide consultation to counselors, teachers, and administrators for students experiencing mental health difficulties.
• Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and community agencies to coordinate mental health services as necessary.
• Consult with and refer parents and students to appropriate specialists, including psychologists, psychiatrists, and community health providers.
• Log all communications and maintain current and confidential records in PowerSchool.
• Pursue professional growth and development.

2. Admissions and Advancement functions are critical to the financial health of a thriving school. The counselor may be asked to support various parts of these two departments outside the regular duties.
3. There may be times when the counselor is asked to help or support another school task that is not in the job description. All employees are expected to help and support one another when possible.
4. Privacy of written documents and conversations throughout all manager and administrative offices is expected even if it is not announced at the time of the meeting.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in school counseling or related field
• Possession of an appropriate Pupil Services Credential, LPCC, MFT, or equivalent
• At least two years of successful counseling in a school setting is required, preferably at the high school level

Compensation
$65,000 to $85,000(11 months, range is approximately August to June) commensurate with experience

The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
