POSITION Under general supervision, to perform a variety of difficult inspection, diagnosis, maintenance and repair of bus, automotive, public works, and emergency equipment; and to perform related work as required.
The City of Montebello's Transportation Department runs 7 days a week, including holidays. Equipment Mechanics bid their shifts based on seniority.
Inspects, locates, and diagnoses mechanical defects on City buses and automobiles, trucks, emergency equipment, construction equipment, and other power-driven equipment; determines the extent of necessary repairs; overhauls, repairs, and adjusts engines, transmissions, differentials, and clutches; tunes up engines, replacing ignition parts and cleaning and adjusting carburetors and fuel injection systems; replaces or repairs faulty parts, including wheel bearings, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and other parts and equipment; repairs and replaces components including generators, distributors, relays, lights, and switches; performs front-end alignments and repairs; repairs and adjusts gasoline generators, water pumps, and air compressors; performs welding work to adapt and fabricate parts and equipment; interchanges gas and diesel engines; performs specialized maintenance and repairs on diesel equipment and hydraulic systems; carries out preventive maintenance programs; makes field and emergency repairs as necessary; maintains records on time and materials used; road tests repaired equipment; installs emergency warning equipment.
Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Work Background: Two years of progressively responsible and varied journey level work experience performing skilled maintenance and repair work on bus, automotive, and other power-driven equipment, including extensive experience on diesel engines and hydraulic systems.
Additional Requirements:
Possession of an appropriate California driver's license. Must be able to obtain a commercial license during the training period, and keep the license valid throughout employment in this position.
Possession of personal tool box and basic hand tool set.
Knowledge of:
Methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in maintaining automotive and heavy duty diesel engine vehicles.
Principles and methods of gas and electrical welding.
Operation and care of internal combustion and diesel engines and components.
Principles and methods of preventive maintenance.
Safe work practices.
Ability to:
Inspect automotive, bus, emergency, and public works equipment to locate mechanical defects.
Diagnose mechanical defects and determine corrective procedures.
Perform specialized repair work on diesel engines and hydraulic systems.
Skillfully use a variety of hand and power tools in equipment inspection, testing, and repair work.
Estimate time and materials needed for repair work.
Perform electrical and gas welding.
Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
