The Roofing Systems Lab (Shingles and Components) Associate Engineer specializes in product testing and delivering quality results through product proof of performance. This role will partner and collaborate across all of R&A (Shingles, Components and Asphalt) and will support prioritization, scheduling, and execution of product testing as well as drive continuous improvement throughout the labs and develop new test methods as required. In addition, the role is responsible for ensuring compliance with all safety and testing protocols, while also demonstrating expertise in OC roofing products and required characterization techniques.
Reports to: Roofing Systems Program Leader
Span of Control: Owns Shingles and Components testing, as assigned, in the Roofing Systems Lab located at the Granville Science & Technology Center.

Communication, Prioritization, and Testing Leadership
- Collaborates with lab partners to understand, identify, and execute on testing required to support business priorities and needs.
- Communicates regularly with partners across the organization, playing an active role in supporting prioritization of testing, communicating progress, and reporting out of RTL testing data.
- Leads product testing including compliance testing, product refresh and new product development qualification, OC & competitive product line review testing, supply security and more.
Technical Expertise, Testing Standards, and New Method Development
- Develops self as the expert in product specific test methods
- Develops deep understanding of product platforms through partnership with product teams to inform testing learning plans.
- Identifies opportunities to improve/develop test methods to support continuous improvement (safety, quality and efficiency)..
- Through partnership with product teams, creates, and implements new test methods that translate customer application needs to measurable product attributes supporting technical and IP claims to enable product differentiation and competitive advantage.
- Protects OC Intellectual Property through documentation of procedures including new test methods and ensuring communication with non-OC contacts is covered under NDA when applicable.
- Helps to coordinate third party testing as required.
Maintain Testing Excellence
- Manages day-to-day testing and supports lab operations including maintaining material flow through the lab (receiving and testing), equipment preventative maintenance and calibration.
- Ensure accurate, timely data for all owned test requests.
- Maintain up-to-date training and records on all applicable test methods and equipment, including safety training.
- Stay current with applicable ASTM methods.
- Identify opportunities to drive continuous improvement in the laboratory and share best practices across S&T, Roofing plants and enterprise.
- Through collaboration with product teams, support product team trials as appropriate.
- Partner with RTL Quality Assurance and Compliance pillar to train and onboard new talent, implement new systems and processes to include LIMS and test method alignment between Granville lab and OC plant labs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science field
- 3+ years of experience working in a R&D laboratory environment
- Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
- Exposure to ASTM, and international standards
- Understanding of basic statistics and ability to analyze and interpret data
- Ability to lift 40 pounds
- Ability to travel up to 5%
EXPERIENCE:
- Demonstration of safe work practices.
- Strong working knowledge of roofing testing methodology and roofing products.
- Experience with forklift operation and preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to generate new and innovative, partner inspired solutions.
- Versed in LIMS implementation and utilization.
