Position Summary:
The Mechanical Engineering (ME) Lab Manager manages the operations of the department’s undergraduate instructional labs and supports ME research labs. They provide technical support and guidance with teaching and research in these ME lab spaces by creating and enforcing workflows, safety protocols, and space and equipment usage guidelines. The Lab Manager directly supervises student workers in the managed spaces. The Lab Manager will serve as a liaison with University Facilities and Environmental Health and Safety Departments. They will provide training for undergraduate and graduate students on safe practices, oversee maintenance of the department materials and chemical inventory, maintain researcher training documentation, conduct lab inspections, and respond to and report on lab safety incidents. Lab Manager directly supervises student workers in the managed spaces. The Lab Manager’s oversight includes support and training to undergraduate and graduate students and support to faculty with academic and research projects, maintaining and updating instructional and research equipment in the managed space, fabricating parts for instructional labs using equipment, maintaining, and updating equipment and apparatuses, maintaining inventory, and providing additional assistance to constituents as needed. The Lab Manager will assist with student design projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Creation and oversight of workflows and safety, and establishing protocols and space and equipment usage guidelines in the ME undergraduate instructional labs and research labs.
Assisting instructors and students in the set up and operation of undergraduate laboratory experiments including mechanical, electrical, data acquisition, and instrumentation support.
Supporting the research mission of the department and college by providing mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation support for sponsored and other research projects and experiments conducted by ME graduate students and faculty.
Maintaining inventory of common parts and materials, and ensuring stock is available for fabrication. Maintaining clean, secure, safe, organized lab environment for faculty, staff, and students.
Manage the upkeep, renovation and calibration of equipment within the managed space; attend necessary trainings and obtain required certifications to use equipment
Collaborate with other Department and College lab personnel, the College Facilities Manager, Environmental Health and Safety, and other necessary constituents on capital expenditures and any relating installations, inventory practices and asset management, as well as general maintenance of managed spaces.
Oversee, manage, and plan an equipment and supplies budget of $50K.
Perform other duties and assist with projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Individual must have a bachelor’s degree or in lieu an equivalent combination of education or experience. Individual must have 3-5 years’ work experience in a related field and/or laboratory environment, including:
Must have strong communication, organizational and problem-solving skills. The individual must be able to work independently as well as with others in a productive manner.
General knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and materials systems to allow set-up, maintenance, calibration, and operation of commercial or custom equipment and instrumentation.
Experience with use of common shop equipment such as drill press, band saw.
Knowledge of materials and proper specifications for fabrication of parts.
Knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical test tools.
Trigonometry knowledge and manufacturing experience.
Ability to fabricate and run experimental setups.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Knowledge of data acquisition instrumentation and software such as NI LabView and SolidWorks would be a plus.
Knowledge of 3D Printing would be a plus.

Physical requirements: items such as lifting, pushing, pulling, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time, manual dexterity, walking etc.
