About this position: The Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East (SLFPA-E) operates the regional flood control system and associated facilities in St. Bernard Parish, East Bank of New Orleans parish, and the East Bank of Jefferson Parish within its control in order to protect lives and property from tidal flooding by natural weather events. It is the duty of Levee District Police Department under SLFPA-E (Orleans Levee District Police Department and East Jefferson Levee District Police Department) to patrol and inspect the levees and flood structures that protect the citizens, businesses and public infrastructure within the area of responsibility of SLFPA-E. The police department also serves to protect lives and property, with primary emphasis on contemporary law enforcement partners.

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years of experience in law enforcement work.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
College training will substitute for a maximum of two years of the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by State and Federal laws are granted.
May be required to possess a valid Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment.
For some positions, evidence of POST certification must be submitted at the time of the application.
May be required to qualify annually with a firearm.
For some positions, applicant must be eligible for bond.
NOTE:
All classified jobs in State service with police officer and wildlife enforcement titles qualify as law enforcement.
Jobs outside State service that will qualify as law enforcement are those performed while commissioned with the power of arrest.

The incumbent performs the full range of police services with an emphasis in the enforcement of laws, department policy and procedure, administrative investigations, and the investigation of crime and accidents, in addition to serving as the lead investigator on all complex cases.
90% Law Enforcement
Protects the integrity of the levee system via motorized vehicle and/or foot patrol
Provides security for the public that utilize the levee system for recreational purposes
Routinely checks businesses and construction sites contiguous with the levee system to ensure proper permitting protocol is followed
Issues warning notices, citations, misdemeanor summons, and makes lawful arrests when necessary
Investigates citizen complaints against police officers
Conducts administrative and criminal investigations on behalf of Police Lieutenant or higher authority
Operates a variety of equipment to include police computers, confidential law enforcement database, audio and video surveillance equipment among other instruments to perform assigned job tasks
Conducts interviews of victims, witnesses and suspects of criminal activity as well as interrogations when needed
Works with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies when assistance is needed on investigations
Supervises, protects and preserves crime scenes. This includes managing the collection of evidence at crime scenes
Prepares investigative reports and additional documentation for the eventual outcome of an investigation
Testifies in court proceedings when required
10% Training and Coordinating
Attends in-service training to maintain minimum POST requirements
Training includes, but is not limited to: firearms, first aid, impact weapon, proper police equipment usage, electrical weapon, investigative training, and any additional training that the department believes will enhance the officer's ability to perform his/her duties
Assists with coordination/delegation of police department resources during emergencies (hurricanes, tropical storms, flood conditions, or other emergency situations)
NOTE: In emergency situations (hurricanes, flood conditions, or other emergency situations) the incumbent must report for duty as assigned and shall remain on duty until specifically released by the Police Captain, Superintendent of Police or Regional Director (or until emergency condition ends). At such time the incumbent may be required to perform any and all activities required to alleviate the situation, e.g., securing facilities, placing barricades, directing traffic, etc.
Physical Requirements: Incumbent must be able to safely and efficiently operate all police vehicles and equipment.
Other Requirements: Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and must be able to acquire and maintain a police commission from the Louisiana Department of Public Safety. Incumbent must be POST Certified, i.e., must have completed all requirements under law as prescribed by the Louisiana Officer Standards of Training (POST) Council before the end of the Probationary period
