Role
The Maintenance Mechanic performs general maintenance and repairs on building structures, and a variety of machinery and equipment. Assists in all trade areas as required. This position reports to the Manager of Central Maintenance Shops, the Manager of Cluster Maintenance Program, or their designee.
Essential Functions
Reporting directly to the Manager of Central Maintenance Shops, the Manager of Cluster Maintenance Program, or their designee, the Maintenance Mechanic performs the following duties:
Electrical – performs electrical repairs and preventive maintenance not requiring a license.
Carpentry/Roofing – performs general repair of building structures.
Plumbing – performs plumbing repairs and preventive maintenance not requiring a license.
Heating/Air-conditioning – performs HVAC repairs and preventive maintenance not requiring a license. Assists in cleaning or repairing of boilers.
Preventive Maintenance – performs scheduled inspections of buildings and equipment, checks and repairs as needed.
Occupational Safety – ensures that work areas are maintained in a clean, safe and sanitary manner in accordance with FCPS accepted standards, policies and procedures.
Customer Service – establishes and maintains effective professional relations with co-workers, administrative staff, school staff, and local regulatory and safety officials. Provides exceptional customer service. Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.
Position will require continual monitoring of a company-provided communications device (i.e., cellular phone or pager) and the ability to respond around-the-clock to all emergency situations at all FCPS facilities.
Ability to work under stress within limited time constraints, and adapt to changing situations and conditions.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Manager of Central Maintenance Shops, the Manager of Cluster Maintenance Program, or their designee.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Three (3) years of paid professional experience in the construction field in any one, or combination, of the following trades; electrical, plumbing, carpentry, air-conditioning, heating, roofing, or equipment maintenance.
Valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a vehicle in accordance with Board of Education policies.
Ability to pass a fit test and a pulmonary test for the use of a protective face mask or respirator.
Able to lift and carry a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.
Able to walk, sit or stand for prolonged periods.
Possess vision abilities including close vision and the ability to adjust focus, ability to differentiate between colors.
Able to access elevated and subsurface workspaces via ladders, lifts, scaffolding, hatches, and manholes.
Able to work in environments subject to hot and cold temperatures and hazards such as electrical shock, chemical exposure, and fall; and able to employ the personal protective equipment necessary to protect against it.
Capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Reports promptly for work, utilizes time wisely and maintains an acceptable attendance pattern.
Ability to read, interpret and diagnose problems from work order requests, laptop computer, blueprints, diagrams, verbal and written instructions.
Preferred Qualifications
Vocational training in a construction field.
CFC Refrigerant Certification (Limited)
Possess current certificate of proficiency in the safe operation of low pressure boilers.
Maintenance experience in large, institutional facilities.
Familiarity with the FCPS policies, goals and programs.
