Assists in planning, developing, and directing year-round and seasonal recreation programs, classes of instruction and activities which will serve the needs and wants of the community. May work with a community center or with a City-wide recreation program. Assists in promoting community participation, not only in the activities themselves but in program planning and leadership, by meeting with neighborhood agencies, community organizations, school personnel, and local businesses. Assists in arranging for the use of recreation facilities by various community groups. Works with communication specialists and marketing professionals, to assist in promoting events, classes, and programs. Participates in the selection of permanent and seasonal staff, and assists in scheduling, assigning, and supervising their work. Maintains time and attendance records and submits approvals for payroll preparation. Assists in supervising the use and maintenance of a community center and/or of other City-owned recreation facilities. Assists in supervising the activities and staffs of the many play-grounds, parks, and schools involved in seasonal recreation programs. Assists in the constant evaluation of programs, staff, and community involvement. Drives to various locations for meetings, events, and trainings. Performs related work as required.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree. College course work may be substituted by professional experience in supervising recreation programs on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license.
Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of municipal recreation planning, organization and administration. Professional and practical knowledge of a wide variety of recreation activities. Knowledge of contemporary urban society and community organizations, community problem solving, and the role of recreation in the community. Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
Skill in using standard office equipment including personal computers and related software.
Ability to assist in the planning, coordinating, and supervising of recreation activities for a community center or City-wide program. Exceptional group leadership ability and ability to promote the active and enthusiastic interest and involvement of others. Ability to establish and maintain effective communication with other persons both verbally and in writing. Ability to quickly learn computer software and applications related to recreation. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. List of essential job functions available upon request.
The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for education. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 80%, Education 20%.
Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.
NOTE: The competitive examination may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates. The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 80% for qualifying, and 20% for education.
RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.
VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.
DRIVER’S LICENSE: An applicant having a valid driver's license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
