The University of Virginia’s Facilities Management Chiller Plant team is seeking an HVAC Assistant. As a member of our team, the successful candidate will be working on fully automated large scale central utility plants. Systems and equipment in these plants represent the engine that drives us toward our efficiency, reliability, and sustainability goals and the successful candidate will be working to ensure their proper function. Our team is entering a new era of technology and as we usher in large scale heat pumps, heat recovery chillers, and geothermal systems there will be an abundance of opportunities to learn and grow while having a front row seat to the evolution of the industry. The successful candidate will report to a chiller plant zone supervisor and work closely with other mechanics. While the successful candidate will spend most of their time performing operation and maintenance activities, there are also opportunities to support the team with respect to controls and water treatment activities. Mechanical and equipment aptitude is a must as is a sense of ownership and pride in one’s work. Experience with large heavy equipment and/or large industrial equipment is a plus.
Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties.
Duties include:
Assist skilled journey level mechanics in performing routine system maintenance, preventative maintenance, equipment repairs, assessing problems, undertaking corrective actions, and site cleanup.
Develop an increasing knowledge of types of HVAC tools, systems, materials, and equipment used in chilled water plants.
Maintain accurate records on time tickets, job requests, and work orders.
Determine material and equipment for specific jobs, as well as initiate procurement.
Maintain compliance with OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations. Use personal safety equipment as instructed, and act in accordance with safety guidelines.
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $16.00 - $20.00 ($33,280 - $41,600 per year). This is a full-time position with UVA benefits. Employee benefits package highlights include:

Physical Demands:
The employee must be able to variously sit, stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, crawl, stoop, bend, squat, lift, pull, and use both hands-on repetitive tasks (including overhead tasks). The employee must have normal vision and hearing (correctable), and for some areas of employment, color vision and sense of smell.
