Overview The Practice Associate II (PA II) under physician supervision, assists with administering all aspects of office procedures. Ensure medical tests are processed timely, results filed in patient file. Performs front desk clerical duties as required, ensures billing questions are addressed, bills coded properly, appointments scheduled, and information provided to other Physicians or labs as appropriate. Assists physician during examination or minor procedures, irrigations, suturing, etc., as qualifications permit. Provides instructions for any ambulatory procedure as detailed by the physician. Applies/removes casts and/or splints as per physician instruction and within qualified limits for position. Ensures tests ordered by physician are completed and physician is informed of results. Receives laboratory reports, notes any abnormal findings, informs physician, and contacts the patient regarding a follow up visit to discuss laboratory results, files reports in patient’s chart. Obtains physical therapy, imaging studies and other lab results as necessary for physician’s review and evaluation. Maintains all examining rooms in a neat and clean fashion; ensures adequate stocking of supplies in each room; maintains sterile equipment. Provides for the safety of patients in the area by reporting any unsafe areas and by practicing good sound safety procedures. Responsible for having a thorough understanding and working knowledge of all equipment in the Medical Office; recognizes and reports any malfunctions to appropriate personnel. Maintains inventory of pharmaceuticals and educational material in the office; contacts appropriate pharmaceutical representative when supply is low; maintains inventory on all medical supplies and advises appropriate personnel when it is time to reorder. When required, performs front desk duties to include making appointments, keeping records, procuring pre-certification from managed care companies, appointment reminders, answering and transacting on telephone calls, completing routing slips for billing, booking surgeries, and assisting other office personnel when necessary. As necessary, contact patients to assess status after procedures and surgery. Understands that ordering supplies and keeping inventory may require some lifting and stocking of shelves. Integrates with Brookdale Hospital staff to ensure timely and friendly patient care. Willingly accepts additional related responsibilities delegated by the Physician or Administrator and performs tasks in a timely fashion to ensure prompt execution. Note: Some responsibilities vary depending on if Assistant is certified or not certified. All other duties as requested. Qualifications Education: Associates degree required, in health-related field preferred, or graduate of an accredited School for Medical Assistants required. Experience: Minimum three (3) years preferred, preferably in a physician’s office preferred. Completed HIPAA training and employs all HIPAA rules and regulations as it pertains to the position. Knowledge and Skills: Ability to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems, as well as be proficient with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office. Familiarity with physician practice management software (AthenHealth, IDX, EPIC, etc.) and electronic medical record a plus. Ability to assist in translating physician orders to diagnosis or CPT-4 coding levels. Licenses, Certifications: Certification and Registration with the American Association of Medical Assistants, preferred. Medical Assistant Certification preferred. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification preferred. Physical Requirements: Position requires prolonged periods of sitting and use of a computer and screen viewing throughout the working day. Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
