DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Responsible assisting with the design, implementation, and operation of the City of Houston’s network infrastructure. Responsible for installation, operation, testing, maintenance of routers, layer 2/3 switches, 802.11, and other network infrastructure equipment as assigned. Requires technical knowledge in performing analysis of software, hardware, and transmission facilities using various diagnostic tools in support of efficient network operations. Participate in a weekly 24/7 on call rotation to troubleshoot, repair, and restore network connectivity to customers as needed. IT Professional – Infrastructure will be required to perform medium networking skills with minimal supervision and in accordance with published standards. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Leads and directs the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Serves as a primary technical professional by overseeing a variety of analytical and technical assignments that are moderate to complex within the Houston Metropolitan area, with responsibilities of maintaining routers, switches, data centers networking, wireless infrastructure along with other network infrastructure equipment. Responsible for assigned network technology and infrastructure systems, which includes planning, managing, implementing, installing, and documenting network infrastructure projects and upgrades. Provides onsite or remote access diagnoses and resolution to network hardware and software problems by responding to customers and service desk work requests. Participates in a weekly 24/7 on call rotation to troubleshoot, repair, and restore network connectivity to customers as needed, including Houston Health departments. The IT Professional will be required to perform moderate to complex networking skills with minimal supervision and in accordance with published standards. Provide network assistance to Project Managers when assigned to a project.
Candidate must successfully pass a CJIS background investigation with the Houston Police Department within 6 months of hire.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. There are no major sources of discomfort in a normal office environment. The position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as computers, printers, or records boxes (up to 40 pounds) and/or stooping, bending, very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis and extensive use of a video display terminal. There may be sources of discomfort, i.e., outdoor installations, hot/cold temperature, and humid/wet conditions. Hands-on environment. May have on-call responsibilities and rotating shifts.
EDUCATION
Requires a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management, and Information Systems (MIS) or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE
The applicant must have at least five (5) years of technology experience supporting IT infrastructure including networks, security, and hardware. Advanced certifications and applicable work experience beyond five (5) years may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the education requirement.
System-specific technical certifications may be considered for substitution for 1 year of experience.
LICENSE
A valid Texas Driver License and compliance with the City of Houston’s policy on driving (AP 2-2).
Must be able to pass a criminal background check, obtain and maintain federally mandated security clearances where required.
