UNIT DESCRIPTION:
Memorial 4 North consists of 26 private rooms, specializing in, but not limited to care of the stroke patient. Memorial 4 North is a mixed acuity unit consisting of telemetry and medical/surgical patients. The types of patients include: those with diagnosis of transient ischemic attack, cerebrovascular accident and seizures, patients requiring telemetry monitoring, patients requiring inotropic therapy for cardiac or renal disease that may be maintained and in acute situations, appropriate interventions may be initiated for stabilization with subsequent timely transfer to an intensive care unit.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE POSITION
The primary purpose of the Unit Assistant is to perform clerical duties. The UA role involves answering phones, answering call lights, assisting physicians during their rounds, order entry, along with chart preparation and tear down.
The secondary purpose of the Unit Assistant is to assist the RN by proactively obtaining blood specimens from patients for the purpose of testing and analysis, assuring expeditious and safe delivery of all lab specimens to the hospital lab, stocking departmental supplies, assisting with selected patient care under the direction of an RN, helping maintain a clean work environment, and transporting patients to various areas of the hospital.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Supports other direct caregivers as needed, under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
- Cleans equipment/utility room and stocks rooms.
- Collects specimens and obtains blood glucose according to established procedures and per physician orders and policy. Arranges for transport of specimens to laboratory as appropriate.
- Performs EKGs, removal of Foley catheters, and bladder scans under the guidance of a registered nurse.
- Places patient on monitor telemetry leads.
- Documents care provided in Cerner.
- Clerical duties including answering of phones, paging physicians, and maintaining up to date on-call lists.
EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- High School graduate
- BLS
- Adheres to the hospital attendance policy and will make every effort to consistently be punctual when reporting to work and during daily activities.
- Basic computer skills are required

WORKING CONDITIONS
- Working hours vary according to departmental needs.
- Works under the direct supervision of an RN.
- Lunch periods will be assigned by the Charge RN.
- Requires full range of body motion which may include handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination
- Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range
- May require exposure to communicable disease, body fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, and other potentially hazardous conditions common to a clinical environment, such as risk of falls, strains, etc.
