Assignments:
Pre-School, Elementary, Middle or High School Classrooms, Basic Skills Instruction Program, Special Education Program, School Transportation, Library/Media in Junior High/Middle Schools. Definition: Under minimal supervision of a certificated teacher and/or certificated site administrator, assists/reinforces in student instruction, behavior, development of language skills, social skills and resource skills of identified students, may perform a wide variety of routine clerical, technical and instructionally related tasks and performs other related duties as required. Examples of Duties: Under supervision aids certificated personnel. Depending upon the area of assignment: and assists students prior to, during and immediately after district transportation; assists the bus/van driver in maintaining appropriate student conduct on the vehicle; assures that all students have seat belts fastened when riding on a bus/van; assists driver with helping wheel chair students on and off the vehicle; pays particular attention that wheel chairs are securely fastened; assists driver in providing written records of violations of the student code to the transportation supervisor; collects and provides to the school secretary those personal items left on the school bus; assumes responsibility for reinforcement of small group and/or individual instruction; prepares instructional materials, administers and corrects tests under the direction of the teacher; attends workshops and/or in-service training provided by the assigned department; escorts students to restrooms and provides assistance when necessary, assists students on the playground, assists students during activities which take place outside the classroom; accompanies the certificated teacher and/or administrator in student related extra-curricular activities; witnesses the actions of students and provides input regarding their behavior to certificated personnel; communicates to and works with the Child Study Teams; provides assistance with multi-media equipment/programs; provides minor clerical assistance to certificated personnel; maintains student and other records; makes mathematical computations that may require several processes; operating duplicating and other office equipment; assists with required reports; accepts overnight assignments as directed; performs other related duties as required. Minimum Employment Standards: Education: Equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade. Experience: Prior experience working with children as a volunteer, instructional aide or other paid employment desirable. Ability/ Willingness to: Assist the development of social skills, self-discipline and survival techniques based on individual needs; exhibit good use of the English language; under- stand and follow written and oral administrator and/or teacher directions; learn and perform basic clerical functions, including using the typewriter and computer, communicate effectively with students and/or adults; establish rapport with students and maintain their collectivity and calmness in other than normal situations; apply common sense and good judgment; act responsibly in emergency situations to assist students; establish and maintain an effective and cooperative working relationship with children and adults.
Other: Effective 6/30/94, passing grade on a Basic Skills Proficiency. Test is required.
