Overview The Director of Operational Risk and Controls is responsible for oversight and optimization of operational risk controls to protect against reputational, regulatory, financial, and operational risks. The Director develops strategies to mitigate risks, ensures compliance with regulations, and implements controls across various departments. The Director is responsible for working with compliance, audit, and business owners throughout the organization to maintain taxonomy and SOPs at the organization level as well as content management. In addition, this role is responsible for monitoring and reporting on quality control of operational units. Additionally, the Director is responsible for ensuring operational business processes meet established standards including the execution of procedures centered around people, process, and technology. This role is a first line of defense for the business and conducts operational risk assessments to ensure compliance with internal business processes and procedures on behalf of Operations. This position also works with leaders to continually improve, enhance, and promote new ways leveraging industry best practices and system support to provide robust quality assurance outcomes for the organization. The Director will assist and support the SVP, Operations on requests from regulators and auditors during annual examinations. This position is responsible for delivering Operations major projects and programs. This is a critical role in advancing our operating model and is responsible for annual planning and change management. Responsibilities Leads the Operational Risk and Control team, ensuring quality controls are appropriately executed. Leads content management to ensure ‘one version of truth’ at the organizational level. Conducts regular risk assessments to identify potential operational risks and evaluate risk severity. Develops and maintains control systems to prevent or deal with violations of legal guidelines and internal policies. Ensures the Operations and Business Transformation department complies with regulatory requirements and internal standards. Prepares detailed reports on risk management and control efforts for senior management and relevant stakeholders. Collaborates with other departments and stakeholders to align on risk management initiatives. Establishes and oversees the application of operational risk standards, technology and tools, and governance processes to create lasting solutions for minimizing losses from failed internal processes, inadequate controls, and emerging risks. Identifies key risk indicators and works with the business to ensure the correct measures are implemented; provides risk direction and support for major initiatives as appropriate. Implements a set of risk metrics and reports including risk appetite, emerging risks, key risk exposures, and Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) Participates in the GRC governance process to assist in updating and reviewing credit union policies and procedures based on regulatory changes, internal audits, and examinations by regulatory agencies. Assists in preparing Operations and Business Transformation department for regulatory examinations and audits by measuring the effectiveness of established standards, procedures, and controls, and raising concerns when standards, procedures, and controls appear to be insufficient in addressing regulatory requirements. Reviews audit results and incorporates findings into monitoring and testing procedures. Analyzes and evaluates program risks and manages program implementations with management and stakeholders. Performs other duties as assigned. Functional Competencies Strong vendor management and leadership qualities to lead cross functional group. Demonstrate knowledge of deploying risk assessment techniques using data analytics Qualifications Bachelor's degree in business administration, Risk Management, relevant field, or equivalent working experience is strongly preferred. Strong understanding of financial services operations, products and services, familiarity with credit union membership structure, regulatory requirements, and compliance standards. Minimum of 10+ years progressive experience in the financial services industry with a record of success supporting a fast-paced business organization, providing strategic and technical expertise while applying best practices and leveraging cross functional relationships. 5+ years’ experience leading a team. Strong critical and strategic thinking skills, with ability to utilize data and insights to inform/steer the organization in achievement of member experience and financial well-being KPIs Strong presentation skills, including development of PPT and effective storytelling. Ability to partner effectively, handle complex situations and strong creative problem solving is a must. Comfortable interacting with people at all levels of the organization including VP’s, our executive team, and CEO. 10+ years of experience in operational experience within the banking, FinTech, or financial services industry 10+ years of experience performing operational risk assessment. 5+ years of process management experience Program and/or project management experience with increasing responsibilities. Knowledge of Financial Service industry regulations, risk management methodologies, operations and or auditing is highly desired.
