POSITION SUMMARY:
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is searching for a detail-oriented and highly skilled Laboratory Technician to support groundbreaking research within high-containment environments. The successful candidate will conduct a range of sophisticated laboratory procedures, including cell culture, DNA sequencing, flow cytometry, peptide synthesis, and more, to advance NIH’s cutting-edge research. Key responsibilities include processing primate and murine tissue samples, performing quality control, maintaining detailed records, and preparing experimental data for presentations and publications. This role demands meticulous adherence to safety and disposal protocols, the ability to work flexible hours, and effective communication with the research team. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in laboratory techniques, a strong commitment to scientific accuracy, and the ability to work within BSL-3 and ABSL-3 high containment environments.
TASKS. The contractor shall:
- Perform a variety of laboratory procedures including cell culture, DNA analysis, RNA isolation, and protein analysis.
- Process primate and murine tissue samples for downstream applications.
- Conduct flow cytometric cell sorting and analysis on supplied research samples.
- Perform experiments using molecular biology, genetics, systems biology, and immunology principles.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of experiments and their results.
- Prepare experimental data for presentations at meetings and for publication in scientific journals.
- Conduct quality control and maintain decontamination protocols for laboratory spaces.
- Generate and maintain laboratory records to support research activities.
- Write comprehensive reports detailing methods, procedures, modifications, and results of experiments.
- Assist in interpreting and evaluating experimental results with the Federal Task Leader, and present findings in weekly meetings.
- Maintain laboratory supplies, equipment, and ensure the routine upkeep of facilities.
- Follow proper laboratory disposal methods and safety procedures.
- Work flexible hours, including weekends, and coordinate with team members under high-stress conditions.
- Maintain laboratory readiness and safety within BSL-3 and ABSL-3 high containment environments.
REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:
- BS/BA degree in Biology or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of work experience in a laboratory setting.
- Proficiency in maintaining accurate and detailed records.
- Strong knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and proper disposal methods.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including possible weekends.
- Ability to work in BSL-3 high containment environments.
- Capability to work in Animal BSL-3 high containment environments with non-human primates (NHPs), rabbits, and mice.
- Skilled in working as part of a team, following standard operating procedures (SOPs) in ABSL-3 laboratory settings.
- Proficient in computer skills, including the use of spreadsheets and data recording software.
- Effective and clear communication skills, with the ability to work under high stress.
