The State Highway Administration’s (SHA) Office of Materials Technology is currently recruiting for an ARAN/Friction Technician (Transportation Engineering Technician III) in Anne Arundel County. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below by the closing date. This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy or function only. You will need to reapply for any future recruitment conducted for this job classification.
Nature of Work: This position is responsible for operating specialized testing vehicles with and without a trailer, and up to 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). Vehicles will be used in roadway testing on SHA network roadways in accordance with American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. This includes but is not limited to surface friction testing and Automatic Road Analyzer (ARAN) automated data collection system vehicles. This position is supervised by the Pavement Testing Team Leader but receives daily work guidance in the field from the ARAN or the Friction Crew Chief to assist in roadway testing data collection. This position is responsible for operating and performing routine and periodical safety and operational checks on testing vehicles and related equipment. This position is also responsible for performing testing duties in the absence of the crew chief.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.
Selective Qualification: One and half (1 ½) years of the required experience must have involved operating a vehicle with a trailer attached.

Selective qualifications are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skill, or abilities).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
A commercial driver’s license.
Notes:
1. Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience.
2. Applicants who possess an Associates Degree in Engineering, Construction Management or Surveying or Surveying Technology from an accredited community college, college or university are considered to have met two years of the required experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Candidate would be required to work overtime and perform work statewide which requires overnight stays up to 2 weeks duration at a time throughout the annual data collection season.
