NATURE OF WORK Under the general direction of the division's Chief/Deputy Chief, manages and leads personnel assigned to his/her shift in carrying out the daily duties and responsibilities of the Fire Division. Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION
Work is performed under the general direction of the Chief and Deputy Chief. The position assists in the formation of procedures and goals for the division. Work involves direct and/or indirect supervision of division employees in several areas. Annual performance reviews are completed for subordinates. The division's operating procedures, state codes, and national guidelines all provide direction for the position. Work performance is reviewed annually with the Chief and/or Deputy Chief.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF WORK
(May not include all duties performed.)
Responds to working fires, hazardous material incidents and other hazardous situations to manage all safety and health related concerns.
Conducts training sessions on safety and makes presentations to the public.
Drives City vehicles during emergency and general daily operations.
Performs performance evaluations of subordinates.
Completes performance evaluations of subordinates.
Recommends/issues discipline as necessary.
Assists in budget preparation.
Responds to fire division emergencies and assists in the incident command structure, including assuming the role of chief officer, as needed.
Maintains daily inventory and supplies.
Assures all stations are maintained and kept in a clean, orderly state at all times.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK
Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Safety or related field; enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program, with completion within 24 months of appointment.
One (1) year of experience as a Lieutenant with experience in training situations or the demonstration of an advanced knowledge of training and safety.
Must possess a valid State of Ohio Motor Vehicle Operator's License free from excessive violations.
Must be certified by the State of Ohio as a Fire Fighter II and Paramedic.
Company Officer Development I, II, II or Fire Officer 1, 2.
Certified Fire Safety Inspector.
Knowledge of emergency medical treatments and procedures.
Knowledge of division goals and objectives.
Knowledge of division policies and procedures.
Knowledge of fire fighting principles, practices and safety procedures.
Knowledge of all applicable NFPA, OSHA and other federal, state and local standards or regulations.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions independently.
Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with trainees, trainers, superiors and other job related personnel.
Ability to instruct, direct and coordinate others.
Knowledge of budget and purchasing procedures.
Knowledge of bid specification and inventory control procedures.
Ability to detect or review minor equipment malfunctions and to determine proper corrective measures.
Ability to climb ladders.
Ability to lift and carry 125 lbs.
Ability to drag 175 lbs. at least 100 feet.
Ability to maintain accurate records.
Ability to read and hear.
Knowledge of incident command system.
Ability to supervise employee training and development.
