The Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) is seeking temporary Recreation Assistants (entry level through leader level) to make a difference in the lives of Arlington’s teens by joining our team of dynamic & engaging after school program staff.
DPR’s Teen After School Programs are designed to provide youth with a fun, safe, challenging, and enriching experience where they can learn, grow, and play! Teen After School Program staff are a consistent and impactful presence on the youth in our programs and help create a physically & emotionally safe space where teens can explore interests, receive academic support, contribute to their community, build new friendships, participate in new experiences, engage in opportunities for learning, and more!
Specific duties include:
Maintaining safe environments for all participants;
Providing exemplary customer service to each participant, family, and guardian;
Planning, leading, and conducting recreation activities;
Enthusiastically and collaboratively participating in program activities;
Performing administrative and supervisory duties (depending on level);
Working with individuals with disabilities and providing personal care of participants (training provided); and
Performing other duties as assigned.
Successful candidates will have good character and integrity, positive communication skills, reliable transportation, and the ability to complete tasks, take initiatives, and work successfully in a team environment.
Selection Criteria
Applications are being accepted for the following position levels:
Recreation Assistant II - ($17.12 - $27.77 Hourly)
Responsible for planning and conducting recreation activities, completing participant and program evaluations, and performing supervisory and administrative duties.
Minimum:
Some experience in administering recreational programs or facility monitoring; and
Adult and Child First Aid/CPR/AED Certifications, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
Recreation Assistant III - ($19.10 - $31.02 Hourly)
Responsible for planning and conducting recreation activities, completing participant and program evaluations, and performing supervisory and administrative duties.
Minimum:
High school diploma/GED or equivalent;
Some experience in administering recreational programs or facility monitoring; and
Adult and Child First Aid/CPR/AED Certifications, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
Recreation Assistant IV - ($23.00 - $37.38 Hourly)
Responsible for directing a program and performing supervisory and administrative duties.
Minimum:
High school diploma/GED or equivalent;
Considerable experience administering recreational programs including some experience leading or supervising recreational programs; and
Adult and Child First Aid/CPR/AED Certifications, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
Substitution: Successful completion of related college coursework from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the experience requirement.
Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
Active Adult and Child First Aid/CPR/AED Certifications;
Experience working with youth in a recreational setting;
Experience working with diverse populations;
Experience and willingness to work with individuals with disabilities; and/or
Bilingual capabilities in English/Spanish.
Special Requirements
If selected, staff may be required to provide:
Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It will include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Driver's License: The applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver's license, or have the ability or willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain or provide a copy of their official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
TB Check: Provide negative TB results or submit to a TB screening.
Letters of Reference/Transcripts: Provide letters of reference and/or supporting documentation to verify work/school experience prior to an offer of employment. Letters of reference may be attached to this application.
Additional Information
The pay ranges listed above are effective July 1, 2024.
Work Hours: Multiple positions are available. Core hours are 2:00-6:00 p.m. Monday - Friday from September - June. Staff hours are 20-35 hours per week depending on position and program location, Additional hours may be available with morning DPR preschool programs, and with Youth, Teen, and Family programs on Arlington Public Schools’ early release days, school break days, evenings and weekends. Additional background checks and paperwork are required for staff interested in working with licensed preschool programs.
