SCHOOL NURSE
DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
Conducts a health services program at one or more schools for the evaluation, improvement, and protection of the health of pupils and school personnel in accordance with State Law and District policies and procedures.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Conducts medical and dental case finding, screening, and referral activities related to health defects of selected pupils, including vision and hearing defects.
-Refers parents of pupils needing health care or welfare assistance to appropriate private or community resources.
-Conducts a program directed toward the control of communicable diseases in the school and community, including immunizations through the County Health Department.
-Serves as a health education resource person to staff and pupils.
-Assists in identification of safety and health hazards on school sites.
-Provides health counseling services for pupils, parents, and school personnel.
-Maintains a health record for each pupil.
-Informs teachers of physical or health liabilities of pupils.
-Issues excuses from physical education classes on request from physicians.
-Secures medical reports required for adaptive physical education class placements.
-Provides emergency nursing service for ill or injured pupils at school.
-Notifies parents of pupils about illnesses, physical defects, and potential health problems and provides health counseling directed toward pursuit of appropriate action.
-Arranges emergency dental care for eligible pupils through the Parent Council Dental Program.
-Conducts special study of pupils eligible for special education classes and serves on the Admissions and Dismissals Committee.
-Arranges for home instruction for eligible pupils.
-High School Nurse sponsors the High School Caduceus Club.
-Performs other duties as assigned.
CREDENTIAL:
Health and Development Credential authorizing service as a school nurse or Standard Designated Services in Health authorizing service as a school nurse, and Audiometry Credential.
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements.
EXPERIENCE:
Successful nursing experience, preferably in the field of public health, is desirable for assignment to this position.
PERSONAL QUALITIES:
Appearance, grooming and personality which establish a desirable example for pupils. Ability to meet District standards for mental and physical health. Ability to communicate with and understand people from all socio-economic groups. Skill in interpersonal relations. Ability to plan and organize time and material.
Requirements / Qualifications
- Valid California credential authorizing service as a School Nurse OR eligible for a provisional credential
- Valid California RN License
- Current CPR/AED/First Aid Certifications
Education:
- Bachelor's degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements.
Experience:
- Successful nursing experience, preferably in the field of public health, is desirable.
