Job Summary
The Schmidt Academy for Software Engineering provides a unique training opportunity for recent undergraduate students with strong software engineering interest to advance discovery. Through their work with the Schmidt Academy, Schmidt Scholars will transform software engineering practices and enable research groups to pursue new scientific and technological advances that would not be feasible otherwise.
Schmidt Scholars will participate in an intensive training “boot camp” in software engineering and will be embedded within a research group for a two-year period, supporting innovative science and facilitating computational approaches across campus. Upon completing the Academy, Schmidt Scholars will have excellent career opportunities both in industry and via graduate school. The boot camp will be run by and the scholars mentored by two Schmidt Academy senior engineers/instructors, who will also interface directly with the Principal Investigators to help develop projects and ensure progress.
Schmidt Scholars will be employed as Caltech research staff members with competitive salary and benefits.
Essential Job Duties
Scholars will work with the Principal Investigator and their group to develop research software over the course of a two-year period.
As embedded members of the research group, Scholars will participate in group meetings, attend domain-specific seminars, and participate in other research group activities.
Scholars will participate in twice-weekly Academy-specific activities including extra lectures/training, academy group meetings, and outings with software engineers outside of Caltech.
Educational Training: If they have not already done so, Scholars will attend software engineering and best practices boot camp.
Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree expected by June 2024.
Significant experience in software development through coursework and/or research.
