The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Southern California seeks an experienced Instructional Lab Manager to provide advanced or specialized instructional laboratory technical services and support to students and faculty. The classes supported use either the dry lab, the wet lab or both for instruction and/or lab activities.
The ideal candidate will collaborate with faculty to support and enhance the education of engineering students, while promoting and enforcing lab safety. This position reports directly to the department chair.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Interface and collaborate with instructors to coordinate lab experiments with lectures
- Assist in defining and describing lab-specific procedures and experiments
- Organize and maintain all instructional lab facilities, ensuring they are in orderly, operable condition at all times, and in compliance with health and safety standards.
- Enforce safety requirements including wearing lab-appropriate personal protective equipment and safe use of equipment, materials and supplies
- Aid in controlling, cataloging, and monitoring of supply inventories and equipment usage by faculty and students
- Aid in specifying experimental equipment, computer parts, measurement systems, etc.
- Maintain, diagnose problems, and facilities repair or replacement of all equipment in the instructional labs. This includes oscilloscopes and other electronics equipment, cell culture incubators and fluorescence microscopes, 3-D printers and other fabrication equipment, computer work stations, and other specialized devices and apparatus used for instruction.
- Construct or adapt specialized lab equipment to meet specific instruction or experimental needs
- Supervise and train technical assistants, Teachings Assistants, and student workers in laboratory operations
- Aid and direct laboratory Teaching Assistants and students in independent projects
- Other duties as assigned
Additional Information:
This is an on-site position. The Instructional Lab Manager will be expected to work onsite 5 days per week. The position is not eligible for remote work.
The annual base salary range for this position is $95,532.62 - $121,211.18. Minimum Education and Experience
Master's Degree; Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education. 3 years of experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Master's degree in engineering or sciences.
The ability to communicate and work with both students and faculty is essential. The position requires strong verbal communication skills and solid writing skills.
The position requires experience in practical biomedical engineering methods, both classical and modern experimental techniques, and technical communications.
Previous experience in instructional lab environments in biomedical or bioengineering departments is desired.
