DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Performs moderately complex, skilled technical work in the design, installation, operation, maintenance and repair of electrical motors, Blowers, instrumentation communications equipment and industrial control systems. Designs, evaluates, and implements data communication networks or microprocessor-based control equipment. Assists in identification and selection of new equipment through collaborations with vendors, user, and management. Diagnoses data communications system failures: interfaces with vendors to resolve problems with various types of data communications facilities. Evaluates networks design to make recommendations for improvement of performance; provides training for installation and operation of network equipment. Maintains statistical reports on project status and inventory. Designs and maintains cable layout logs. Operates test equipment to isolate software/hardware circuits or cable relates problems. Repairs and calibrates all components of process control systems or data communications networks; troubleshoots and repairs both digital and analog equipment to the component level. May lead other technical hardware analysts. Perform other duties as assigned
WORKING CONDITIONS This position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis.
This is a Department of Houston Public Works position at the Tier I Level.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires an associate degree in a computer science, instrumentation, or electronics discipline or the equivalent, such as certification in a technical/specialty program of up to three years in duration.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS One year of experience in the design, installation, operation and/or maintenance of a computerized data network or industrial control system is required.
Relevant experience (as described above) may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS Valid Texas Driver’s License and compliance with the City of Houston’s policy on driving (AP 2-2).
PREFERENCES
Preferences will be given to applicants with extensive experience with remote installation, troubleshooting and resolving, technical and systems support issues related to physical and virtual servers, and other infrastructure components, Microsoft System Center Configuration Center, Advance System Backup/Restore, Virtualization, Active Directory, and ITIL Best Practice. Preference will be given to the candidate with e electrical and PLC experience. Preference will be given to the candidate with a Groundwater operations license issued by TCEQ.
