POSITION TITLE: CITYWIDE LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST - .5 Greene-Hills School, .5 West Bristol School
DEPARTMENT: TEACHER
REPORTS TO: SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
SUMMARY: To provide all students with a diverse library media program containing a wide variety of materials that will invite intellectual growth and to aid all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of media center resources.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

• Operates and supervises the media center(s) to which he/she is assigned.
• Evaluates, selects and requisitions new media center materials.
• Assists teachers in the selection of books, electronic resources, computer programs and other instructional materials and makes media center materials available to supplement the instructional program.
• Informs teachers and other staff members concerning new materials the media center acquires.
• Maintains and instructs students/teachers how to access Destiny, the online library catalog.
• Arranges for interlibrary loan of materials of interest or use to teachers.
• Collaborates with teachers in planning standards-based instruction for information literacy and use of information and technological tools
• Promotes appropriate conduct of students using media center facilities.
• Helps students to develop habits of independent information literacy work and to develop skill in the use of print and digital reference materials in relation to planned assignments.
• Collaborates with teachers to support learning.
• Supports all students with diverse needs
• Advocates for and designs independent reading promotion programming
• Prepares and administers the media center budget.
• Supervises media center staff in the performance of their duties.
• Plans and supervises the distribution and storage of all media materials and equipment.
• Plans and organizes the utilization of technology within the media center.
• Maintains professional competence through in-service education provided by the district and in self-selected professional growth activities.
• Serves on faculty and curriculum committees.

• Bachelor Degree.
• Additional credits required for completion of certification requirements.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid Connecticut Library Media Specialist (062) Teaching Certificate.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations. Ability to write memos, reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

COMPUTER SKILLS:
Basic knowledge and experience with standard hardware and software applications including library automation systems and electronic resources for research. Ability to use a computer for Email, word processing, accounting, databases and instructional presentations.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and teaching competencies to instructional programs. Ability to plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents. Skill in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies and the code of professional responsibility for teachers.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to fifty (50) pounds, such as boxes of books and AV/VCR carts. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, such as to read handwritten or typed material and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.

The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud. Duties are performed indoors and occasionally outdoors.

SALARY: Per contract DATE OF SERVICE: 2024/2025 School year

HOURS: 8:05am - 3:00pm
