OPEN EXAMINATION – SIX MONTH PROBATIONARY PERIOD
Under the direction of the Civil Engineer or Project Manager, this supervisory position performs moderately difficult professional engineering work in connection with a wide variety of civil engineering projects within the Public Works Department, Engineering Division.
Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:
Ensures Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest level of ethical standards.
Collaborates with engineers and project managers to prepare or assist in the planning, design, and execution of civil engineering projects, including preparation of the plans, specifications, estimates, and reports involved in the construction and operation of a wide variety of civil engineering work such as storm drains, sanitary sewers, street and highways, structures, buildings, sewer, storm drain, or water utility systems.
Checks hydraulics, structures, mechanics, and strength of materials and surveying calculations. Checks, analyzes, reduces, and applies survey, hydrographic, topographic, and other field data and transfers to maps, profiles, cross sections, graphs, and other compilation forms. Reviews legal descriptions, easements, and contract documents for completeness and accuracy.
Conduct field surveys, collect relevant data, and perform analysis to support project.
Prepare or assist in the preparation of engineering designs, drawings, and specifications using computer-aided design (CAD) software and other relevant tools.
Ensures that all projects comply with relevant codes, regulations, and standards set forth by local, state, and federal agencies.
Provides technical support to the engineers or the project managers during the construction phase, including reviewing plans, conducting site visits, and addressing any issues or challenges that arise.
Communicates effectively with internal stakeholders, external agencies, contractors, and the public to facilitate project coordination and resolve any concerns or conflicts.
Maintains accurate project documentation, records, and reports to track progress, expenditures, and compliance with established timelines and budgets.
Drives vehicle to make field inspections of construction projects to monitor compliance with plans and City standards.
Reviews and evaluates employee job performance and recommends personnel actions. Trains subordinates in a variety of tasks.
Prepares packages for City Council relative to proposed projects.
Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe efficient manner.
Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.
Experience
Two years of professional civil engineering experience.
Previous experience in civil engineering within a public works or municipal setting is highly desirable.
Education/Training
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or certificate as an Engineer-in-Training from the State of California.
License(s) / Certification(s)
Valid Class C California driver’s license.
Registration as a Civil Engineer with the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers is desirable.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of:
Relevant regulations, codes, and standards governing civil engineering practices.
Computer and computer-aided design and drafting (Autodesk Civil 3D).
Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Microsoft Project
Ability to:
Provide exceptional customer service practices to those using the services of the Public Works Department.
Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
Develop necessary skills from on-the-job training and meet the standards of performance for the classification by the end of the probationary period.
Interpret data, solve problems, and make informed decisions.
Establish and maintain smooth and effective working relationships.
Design and draft engineering sketches and drawings.
Interact with other divisions or section employees to obtain information necessary for design and project specifications.
Model and practice the highest standards of ethical conduct.
Review and evaluate employees' job performance and recommend appropriate personnel action.
Work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously while adhering to deadlines and budget constraints.
