Job Abstract

$52,500 - $107,850 annually (commensurate with experience)

A.   POSITION PURPOSE

The University competes at the NCAA Division I level and is a member of the West Coast Conference (WCC). Reporting to the Head Coach of Baseball, the Assistant Coach is responsible for assisting in all aspects of running a Division I Baseball program including, but not limited to: game preparation, teaching and coaching; practices and player conditioning; recruitment and retention of student-athletes; program administration; academic integrity; and donor/alumni public relations and youth programs. In addition, the assistant coach is responsible for abiding by all conference and NCAA regulations to ensure departmental compliance. 

A. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assist with creation and implementation of effective match, practice and conditioning plans for the student-athletes.

• Work with Head Coach to develop effective drills and strategies for player improvement.

• Assist and/or monitor strength and conditioning as needed.

2. Direct or assist with recruitment of the best student-athlete within the admissions, financial and regulatory standards and policies established by the University, WCC and NCAA.

• Direct or assist with the recruiting efforts of the coaches and staff in order to recruit the best student-athlete within the admissions, financial, and regulatory standards and policies established by the University, WCC, and NCAA.

• Work with department administrative assistance to develop a comprehensive recruiting database system.

• Identify potential student-athletes, determine scouting opportunities and create an overall program to recruit selected students.

3. Direct or assist with the scouting program.

• Assign games to selected coaches. 

• Prepare an offensive and defensive game plan for each opponent.

• Assist with the scouting program as assigned.

4. Assist with administrative responsibilities of the Baseball program in an efficient and responsible manner.

• Work with various areas of the department (equipment room, facilities, etc.) to ensure proper communication of schedules and other needs.

5. Assist in the monitoring and verification of program related expenditures and revenues.

• Assist with travel arrangements and finances.

• Ensure fiscal responsibility by administering the program's budget within University and Department guidelines.

• Organize and monitor expenses and revenues for fundraisers, special events and summer programs.

6. Assist with program promotion, public relations/community outreach appearances, and media-related activities.

• Be actively involved in the fundraising activities of the program.

• Serve as a resource for interested parties regarding the numerous basketball events at Santa Clara.

7. Skillfully communicate with colleagues and student-athletes. 

• Serve as a role model and example of sportsmanlike conduct and of the qualities taught by Santa Clara University.

• Maintain active communication with internal constituencies.

8. Display commitment to the academic success of student-athletes.

• Work cooperatively and effectively with Academic Support Services staff.

• Assist and/or monitor study hall program.

9. Abide by all conference, department and NCAA regulations and assist to ensure departmental compliance.

• Successfully pass NCAA recruiting test.

• Attend all compliance seminars and reviews.

• Maintain current CPR certification.

10. Other Duties as Assigned.

• Occasionally provides work direction to student managers.

D.   GENERAL GUIDELINES

• Models the office culture guidelines of the Department of Athletics.

• Is aware of and abides by all NCAA, WCC and other applicable rules and regulations.

• Sets a positive example of behavior for students and the Santa Clara University community.

• Represents Santa Clara University in the community.

E.   QUALIFICATIONS
 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The items below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities, education, and experience required or preferred.

This position requires the ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.

1. Knowledge

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the sport of baseball is required.

2. Skills

• Strong, positive communication skills as a coach and as a member of the Department of Athletics.

3. Abilities

• Ability to interact with students and fellow coaches in a positive manner.

4. Education

• Bachelor's degree required.

5. Years of Experience

• Minimum of three years of demonstrated success in a coach, baseball operations or playing position at the Division I level required.
