Position
The Dublin San Ramon Services District is recruiting for a regular, full-time Environmental Chemist I/II in the Laboratory & Technical Services Division in the Operations Department.
Under direction or general supervision, learns and performs a variety of routine to complex chemical, physical, biological, and microbiological analyses involved in the testing of District’s potable and recycled water and wastewater quality; performs a variety of technical tasks relative to conducting and interpreting standard and complex laboratory analyses; collects samples; sets up testing procedures, records data, and analyzes results; assists with field and laboratory investigations to determine and mitigate wastewater and water problems; and performs related duties, as required.

IDEAL CANDIDATE The ideal candidate for this position will possess:
Strong working knowledge of environmental laboratory processes (wastewater and/or drinking water) and procedures, including instrumentation, QA/QC, and LIMS.
Experience with laboratory instrumentation (ICP/MS, GC/MS, IC, FIMS, SKALAR).
Excellent communication and writing skills.
Strong analytical and inter-personal skills.
Mentorship and technical training skills.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Environmental Chemist I Receives general supervision from the Laboratory Supervisor. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.
Environmental Chemist II Receives direction from the Laboratory Supervisor.

Training and Experience
To qualify, a successful incumbent must possess both education and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and abilities. Experience may not substitute for education. However, the requirement for equivalent to a bachelor's degree could be met by demonstrating completion of a number of higher-level educational units that would normally meet a bachelor degree requirement. Minimum requirements to obtain the requisite knowledge and abilities are:
Environmental Chemist I
Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree with major emphasis in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or a closely related field.
One (1) year of technical experience in water, wastewater, environmental, or industrial laboratory testing, analysis, and control.
Possession and maintenance of a California Water Environment Association Laboratory Analyst Grade I certificate within two (2) years of appointment is required.
Environmental Chemist II
Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree with major emphasis in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or a closely related field.
Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in water, wastewater, environmental, or industrial laboratory testing, analysis, and control comparable to the Environmental Chemist I.
Possession and maintenance of a California Water Environmental Association Laboratory Analyst Grade I certificate is required upon appointment.
Possession and maintenance of a California Water Environment Association Laboratory Analyst Grade II certificate within one (1) year of appointment is required.
Other Recruitment Standards
Possession of a Class C Driver's License required by the State of California, Department of Motor Vehicles, to perform the duties of the position. Continued maintenance of said driver's license in compliance with established District vehicle operation standards, and the ability to be insured for the operation of a vehicle/District vehicle in accordance with the terms and conditions of the District's insurance program are conditions of continuing employment. The CSRMA driving standards are included herein by reference.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Work unusual shifts, weekends, evenings, and holidays when required.
Incumbents in this class are required to participate in the District's Shave-on-Demand policy when required to wear respiratory protection or other safety equipment.
SELECTION PROCEDURE The selection process may consist of an evaluation of the applicant's qualifications, appraisal board interview, written examination, practical exercise and/or internal department interviews, reference check and a review of prior performance evaluations. Upon completion of the selection process, an offer of employment may be conditionally based upon the successful completion of an employment verification, criminal background check and a pre-employment medical exam.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKER All Dublin San Ramon Services District employees are, by State and Federal law, Disaster Service Workers. The roles and responsibilities for Disaster Service Workers are authorized by the California Emergency Services Act and are defined in the California Labor Code. In the event of a declaration of emergency, any employee of the District may be assigned to perform activities which promote the protection of public health and safety or the preservation of lives and property. Such assignments may require service at locations, times, and under conditions that are significantly different than the normal work assignments and may continue into the recovery phase of the emergency. If a “Local Emergency” is declared during the employee’s shift, employees will be expected to remain at work to respond to the emergency needs of the community. If a “Local Emergency” is declared outside of the employee’s shift, employees must make every effort to contact their direct supervisor or department head to obtain reporting instructions as Disaster Service Workers.
