Typical Tasks
Obtains quality images for medical diagnosis by performing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedures as directed by a physician by using appropriate technical factors and scanning techniques;
Communicates MRI scan information appropriately to physician to determine need for further scanning;
Properly identifies and processes MRI scan images for review by physician;
Performs MRA procedures as assigned;
Administers or assists physician in administering contrast media;
Performs various quality control activities;
May coordinate with physicians and patient care areas regarding scheduling and sedation of patients;
Analyzes safety information in relation to patient to ensure that there are no contraindications to examination;
Ensures that the MRI area is clean, stocked, and safe for patients, visitors and staff;
Instructs, prepares and positions patients for MRI scans;
Troubleshoots, documents, and communicates equipment problems;
Assists in training student technologists, Radiology residents and Diagnostic Imaging Technologists in MRI technique;
Performs general radiographic procedures when required;
Cleans and stocks procedure rooms and ancillary areas, and maintains proper inventory levels;
Performs routine administrative tasks;
Performs other related duties as required.
Employment Standards
Possession of a State of California certificate to practice as a radiologic technologist.
Demonstrated competence in the performance of standard magnetic resonance technology procedures and trained in and competent to perform MRA.
Sufficient education, training and experience to enable a candidate to demonstrate possession of the knowledge and abilities listed below.
Knowledge of
Magnetic resonance imaging techniques, methods, and equipment;
General radiographic techniques, methods, and equipment;
Magnetic resonance imaging physics, physiology, structural and organic anatomy including cross-sectional anatomy;
Magnetic Resonance Angiography procedures;
Methods of positioning patients for radiographic and magnetic resonance imaging procedures;
Principles of image processing and development applicable to diagnostic imaging;
Safety principles and procedures relating to diagnostic imaging in general and magnetic resonance imaging in particular;
Basic computer skills.
Ability to
Perform general radiographic and magnetic resonance imaging procedures;
Perform Magnetic Resonance Angiography procedures;
Perform basic quality control on MRI equipment;
Ability to recognize anomalies/abnormalities for the purpose of notifying interpreting physician;
Recognize and take appropriate action related to equipment malfunctions;
Instruct and position patient for MRI scan and other radiographic procedures;
Communicate effectively with patients, co-workers and medical staff;
Provide safe and appropriate care to all patients, even in stressful situations;
Follow written and oral instructions;
Use professional resources to remain current in general radiology and magnetic resonance imaging;
Accurately bill for complex procedures and supplies in a timely fashion;
