General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.
We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Scientist to join the DIII-D team to contribute on establishing the scientific basis for the advanced tokamak approach to fusion energy production through experiments, analysis and modeling. With general supervision and limited review, this position is responsible for executing experiments, analysis and simulation, overseeing the magnetic diagnostics on DIII-D, working to understand how to project and raise performance in plasma operating scenarios for ITER and future steady state devices.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develops and executes rigorously justified experiments, analysis and simulation that lead to an understanding of the key physics of plasma stability limits.
Work with other scientists on the use of internal and external 3D coils for the control of transient MHD events, and the measurement and understanding of plasma response to 3D magnetic perturbations techniques.
Maintains, operates and upgrades the magnetic diagnostics on DIII-D with the help of other staff scientists and postdocs. Potential for advancement to leadership position in magnetic diagnostics.
Partners with ITER and FPP groups to understand and mitigate the effect of plasma instabilities to improve and optimize scenario development.
Participates in experimental campaign initiatives, including setting broad research vision and strategy for plasma stability and 3D response research.
Publishes in recognized scientific journals, presents work at national level, pursues research projects, and works with and provides support to the wider DIII-D team in the above topic areas.
Directs the activities of designers, technicians and may direct the activities of less experienced professional staff.
Responsible for observing all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company. Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

Equivalent scientific experience may be substituted in lieu of education.
Must have;
Detailed and extensive technical expertise and application of scientific principles, concepts, theory, and practice;
Experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts;
Experience working with tokamaks including programming discharges to achieve physics goals; and,
Have original work(s) published in professional scientific journals.
Must possess the ability to;
Understand new concepts quickly;
Apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment;
Organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and,
Determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one scientific area; and, lead a team of less experienced professional employees on semi-routine tasks.

Any time you conduct a search, the system shows you job matches, ranked by their Relevance Score (RS).
The score is calculated by a proprietary algorithm that uses Intelligent Machine Learning.
The Relevance Score tells you how well the job opportunity matches your search term or terms.
When not logged in, the system is limited to one search term. Scores for single term matches are usually lower.
When you register, log in, and set up multiple terms prioritized by importance, the jobs found for you will receive a much higher Relevance Score.
