RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide leadership for the design, organization, implementation and evaluation of instruction, curriculum and professional development in literacy/language arts in the district, grades Pk-12.
Work cooperatively with district/school teams and external partners in the development of a unified, district-wide instructional program in literacy/language arts. Coordinate curriculum activities and foster a creative, supportive environment for CT Core Standards aligned curriculum development, innovation and professional growth.
Monitor student assessment data to help identify staff training needs and coordinate planning of professional development opportunities, under the direction of the Chief Academic Officers.
Work closely with building principals to assist them in their roles in program implementation and in evaluation of classroom instruction that is aligned to CT Core Standards. Provide support to determine specific professional development needs at the building level. Help to create learning communities focused on goals aligned to district standards and the District Improvement Plan.
Provide support and technical assistance to principals and school staff through routine visits, regularly scheduled meetings, and responses to requests for assistance.
In providing support at the school level, develop and foster a culture of collaborative and reflective practice among teachers; differentiate support for teachers based on various assessment data.
Oversee the planning and delivery of professional development to literacy coaches in schools.
Help plan and schedule opportunities to strengthen home-school connections and inform parents and community about the district’s CT Core Standards aligned literacy programs.
Participate in the planning and organization of SRBI programs in literacy/language arts, based on district assessments of learning needs of students.
Prepare and maintain all appropriate records and reports for literacy programs.
Implement and monitor district procedures to ensure compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
Perform other duties, as assigned by the Chief Academic Officers or Superintendent.
Connecticut certification – Teacher – Reading (or related field)
Master’s Degree in a field related to literacy/language arts
Minimum five years successful teaching experience in the area of literacy/language arts
Minimum three years successful supervisory experience
Demonstrated leadership in improving literacy education at the school and/or district level, including a record of excellence in planning and implementing student assessment strategies, instructional delivery, classroom management and professional development.
Knowledge of and/or experience in the various aspects of administration and supervision of school programs
Demonstrated knowledge of current CT Core Standard trends and development of programs in literacy
Proven ability to apply knowledge and skills in the areas of curriculum development, program writing and program evaluation
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills
Demonstrated ability to work harmoniously and effectively with teachers, administrators, parents and community groups
Demonstrated proficiency in the use of technology for communication, reports and research
Evidence of diplomacy, flexibility, creativity and perseverance
