Job Summary
DEFINITION
Under the supervision of the Director of Special Education and the direction of the Behavior Intervention Specialist, provide a variety of specialized duties which support and serve students who require Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) strategies; provides directed learning experiences; performs clerical duties; and performs related work as required. The BIA administers ABA to students in various settings. The BIA provides services in both general education and special education settings.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Positions assigned to this class assist students and teachers in a variety of special education programs and instructional settings. Incumbents have as a primary and continuing assignment the support and reinforcement of behavioral support planned by a professional staff member and the performance of routine behavioral support related work. Incumbents may be assigned to specialized learning programs and may learn the characteristics of the program through on-the-job training and workshop attendance; however, the entrance requirements of all positions in this class are highly similar, except where personality may be a factor in the final selection. Positions in this class are differentiated from Instructional Assistant positions in that incumbents deal specifically with students with behavioral needs.

Works with students who require intensive behavior intervention. Provides directed learning experiences, including social skills. Administers ABA strategies to students in general education and in special education. Assists certificated staff and instructional assistants when implementing behavioral strategies. Regularly
Requirements / Qualifications
Knowledge and Skills:
ABA procedures, social skills training, implementation of behavior support plans and behavior intervention plans. Appropriate safety precautions and procedures for classroom and school-wide activities. Use of word processor, computer, tablet, and other standard office equipment. Data collection methodologies. Data graphing.
Abilities:
Learn of the general needs and behavior of students with a variety of disabilities.
Attend and successfully complete ABA, Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) trainings.
Assist instructional assistants and certificated staff in the implementation of behavioral strategies. Demonstrate and instruct instructional assistants through modeling and/or shadowing techniques. Implement behavior strategies and program modifications in accordance with a student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). Work effectively with parents, teachers, students, other staff, and the general public. Reinforce social skills plans. Run social skills groups. Understand and accurately follow oral and written instructions. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Drive a car.
Must be able to pass CPI and Advanced CPI courses
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalent
2 years of study in an institution of higher learning, or an Associate’s Degree
in a related field, such as psychology or child development preferred. Two years of directly related experience working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, Multiple Disabilities, Emotional Disturbance, or other disabilities.
Licenses and Certificates: Valid California driver’s license. Valid first aid and CPR certificates. Registered Behavior Technician certification preferred.
