Packaging Engineer (PE) is responsible for supporting the packaging of coffee at the Alameda roasting plant (24-hour high volume & high-speed coffee manufacturing). The primary responsibility of the PE is to improve the efficiency, safety, and quality of the Packaging equipment in the packaging. PE is responsible for supporting delivery to key safety, cost, quality, delivery, and sustainability targets for the plant. PE provides packaging operations with technical equipment expertise, standard procedures for operation, change-over and maintenance of packaging equipment, new packaging equipment, equipment improvement, upgrades and documentation, operator and maintenance training and hand-on support.
Plant Support (60%) - PE will act as subject matter expert and will participate in plant improving Global Efficiency (GE) by addressing packaging equipment downtime and research, design, development of improved packaging methods, and the continuous improvement of existing packaging processes in a high-volume manufacturing environment.
The position's key responsibilities include the following:
Subject matter expert for assessing and improving Peet’s packaging processes, deploying new technologies, and retrofitting current lines for safety, quality & efficiency reasons as well as recommending purchase of new equipment.
Collaborate with maintenance, quality, and suppliers to troubleshoot packaging issues to maintain/improve Peet’s bag quality.
By utilizing packaging engineering principles and continuous improvement techniques to improve plant global efficiency.
Supports Alameda modernization plan by actively participating in development of the concepts, justification, and prototyping. Execute chosen initiatives assigned execution.
As assigned supports packaging engineering CAPEX projects for the entire Alameda plant
Identifies opportunities for equipment modification, replacement, and deployment of packaging solutions. Designs, provides concepts, ROI justification and budgets for proposed solutions. Oversees project management of multiple concurrent projects involving packaging equipment layout and the specification, design, qualification, and implementation of packaging solutions.
Actively participates in continuous Improvement initiatives by addressing top equipment downtime opportunities.
Generate cost savings by implementing improving existing or deploying cost effective new packaging solutions into production.
Minimize packaging material scrap, product scrap and product donation/giveaway.
Supports optimizing existing packaging equipment to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
As assigned, investigates, and addresses quality issues that maybe have been caused due to equipment malfunction or design limitation and initiates appropriate corrective action.
Overseeing the installation & qualification (IQ/OQ/PQ) of the new packaging equipment
Provide 2nd level technical support to maintenance technicians as needed.
Performs role with integrity, high sense of accountability, pursuing innovation, and delivering quality, driving continuous improvement & using resources wisely.
New production introduction [NPI] (20%) – PE will plant lead on NPI and collaborate with marketing, R&D, Sustainability, and innovation teams on Peet’s NPI initiatives by providing input on feasibility, capability, cost estimates and creating line standards & hands-on support during early stages of NPI.
Alameda modernization plan (20%) - Supports the development and implementation of vision for Alameda modernization plan especially.
Education/ Experience/ Competency:
A "Can Do" and resourceful attitude & ability to work with diverse teams is a must have to succeed in this role.
BS degree in Packaging or Mechanical Engineering. Master’s degree highly desired.
5-7 years of hands-on experience in Packaging improvement projects and working with packaging lines design and install.
Experienced in high-speed VFSS for packaging of dry goods in food industry, GMP Practices, OSHA regulations.
2-3 years Project management experience
A demonstrated ability to select and apply sound engineering practices and principles to the design and development of high-volume consumer products packaging.
Strong background and proven results in leading continuous improvement efforts through the application of Lean Manufacturing and 6 Sigma principles.
Operate effectively in fast paced team environment.
Ability to document and communicate technical details effectively
Strong problem solving, troubleshooting, and data analysis skills
3D CAD skills and proficiency with standard computer applications
Familiarity with manufacturing ERP systems, D365 preferred.
Communication Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. The target annual base salary range for this position is $120,000-160,000. The actual base salary offered depends on a variety of factors, which may include, as applicable, the applicant’s qualifications for the position; years of relevant experience; specific and unique skills; level of education attained; certifications or other professional licenses held; other legitimate, non-discriminatory business factors specific to the position; and the geographic location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will perform the job.
