Job Description Summary:
GW Information Technology is the chief provider of technology services and applications at GW. The area partners with all key stakeholders across GW to equip students, faculty, and staff with the technology and tools necessary to achieve academic excellence. This position works within GW Information Technology and ensures collaboration with both University stakeholders and external vendors.
This experienced Network Engineer, Operations position aids in managing the overall operations of the university’s information network, which includes operational support, configuration, implementation of change request services, and recommending standards for protocols, electronic interfaces, electronic mail, network management software, and network hardware. Typically with enterprise-wide scope, the core responsibilities of this role are to implement designs for networks for the distribution of administrative, academic and research data throughout the university and to perform network implementation and troubleshooting. Specifically, this Network Engineer, Operations position will perform design and engineering efforts focused in the areas of route/switch and network security. This position will require a strong knowledge base across all technology stacks, however, will be a point of escalation for complex network and security issues and improvements. This position works both independently and as part of a team, and provides escalation support and training for lower-tier support teams. Responsibilities may also include developing and maintaining documentation, developing Methods of Procedure for implementation, mentoring junior team members and developing and recommending strategies for implementation and deployment.
Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

2+ Years Experience in the fields of networking, network security, and data centers, to include a minimum of two years of experience configuring, deploying, and maintaining network devices, servers, and applications in a production and distributed campus environment
Some ability to script and a clear understanding of network automation, security and visibility
Experience in communicating about and responding to campus-wide service outages and/or network security incidents, including leading technical teams to determine resolutions and communicating statuses to the broader IT department
In-depth knowledge of standard network protocols, common network services, network management systems and troubleshooting tools and skills
Ability and willingness to lead teams of network associates for implementation efforts and at times work with Network Engineers on network designs
Demonstrate past experience developing new ideas and technologies around network automation and improvement, from conception to implementation
Ability to communicate well, both written and verbally while both leading and participating in team efforts
