Position Information
Arlington County’s Police Department (ACPD) is seeking multiple motivated and service minded individuals to serve as Transportation Safety Specialist (TSS) in the Transportation Management Unit (TMU). These positions will participate in the day-to-day requirements of the department’s initiatives and trained in traffic direction and control, verbal de-escalation techniques, applicable traffic and parking laws, and the use of traffic safety related electronic equipment.
The mission of TMU is to ensure the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and users of multi-modal transportation on county roadways. Transportation Safety Specialist are highly visible representatives of County Government and the Police Department and promote safety, security, and competence through their active presence in the community. They will provide service to County residents and visitors and promote safety.
Specific responsibilities include:
Coordinating the maintenance and deployment of Variable Message Boards (VMB) and portable speed feedback equipment throughout the county to inform the public of major traffic disruptions and events, educate motorists on transportation safety initiatives, bring awareness to driving behavior and speed and enhance overall community outreach;
Managing the deployment of Traffic Classifiers throughout the county to capture and record data to be used by the ACPD and DES-TEO to address speed complaints and identify problematic areas;
Coordinating the maintenance, replacement, and deployment of additional transportation safety equipment including Vehicle Immobilization Devices (Boots), Traffic Cones, and Portable Signs;
Working Collaboratively with DES-TEO on parking education and issues surrounding all forms of multi modal transportation, including-scooters, electric and traditional bicycles, and pedestrians;
Conducting regular enforcement of state and county parking laws and ordinances and received parking complaints:
Supplementing School Crossing Guard location as needed and working assigned post and/or redirecting traffic during ACPD/County sponsored Special Events throughout the year.
The Ideal candidate will have the following:
Strong written and verbal communication skills to exchange clearly and concisely complex and/or confidential information.
Knowledge and/or experience of public safety practices and procedures to develop transportation safety programs for the TMU Unit.
Problem solving skills to gather relevant information to solve vaguely defined practical problems, and
Ability to learn Virginia and Arlington County parking, traffic, and license regulations.
Selection Criteria
Minimum:
High School Diploma or vocational school, a GED certificate, or the equivalent; Plus
Some experience performing traffic direction and control.
Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
Working at a public safety agency or conducting transportation safety related programs.
Advance skill level in Microsoft computer programs (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, MS Teams, etc.)
Familiarity with traffic safety equipment: Variable Messaging Signboards, Traffic/Speed Analysis Equipment, deploying traffic control equipment, vehicle trailers: and/or
Interacting with the public in stressful or confrontational situations and deescalating situations where you are interacting with confrontational individuals.
Special Requirements
Work Environment: Transportation Safety Specialist conduct their work in an environment that involves walking several miles per day for extended periods of time while outdoors in all types of weather to include heavy rain, extreme heat and extreme cold and frequently operate motor vehicles of varying size. Other physical aspects of the position include bending over and lifting parking boots that weigh up to 35 pounds, and carrying, lifting, and loading stacks of traffic cones and barricades that weigh up to 50 pounds per stack from beds of pick-up trucks and rapidly deploying them along the roadway.
Background Check: An offer of employment WILL be contingent upon a favorable pre-hire background check. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, and credit history. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information. Due to the sensitive nature of this position, candidates will be required to undergo a pre-employment polygraph examination and a character/background investigation conducted by the Police Department.
Driver License: Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver license. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or they must provide a copy of official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the driving record.
Certification and Licenses: TSS must possess or obtain a Traffic Control Certification within 18 months of employment AND successfully complete the following courses:
Trailer and Towing Operations
DCJS Point and Control
CPR
National traffic incident Management (TIM) responder or similar/equivalent certification.
Valid license to operate a motor vehicle required. The applicant must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of the applicant’s official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent on a favorable review of the applicant’s driving record and criminal history.
Additional Information
Work Hours/Conditions: Specific work hours vary and is determined at the time of hire. Position requires shift work and working weekend, evenings, holidays, special events, and scheduled and unscheduled overtime.
Must be available to work after hours and in emergency situations. In response to emergencies, work may be performed evenings, overnight, and/or on weekends.

The Police Department office is based at 1425 North Courthouse Road; however, job duties are performed at various locations throughout Arlington County.
