The Mayo Clinic Department of Neuroscience is recruiting an outstanding early- to mid-career scientist (PhD, MD/PhD, MD or equivalent) with neurotherapeutic research focus and expertise in biotechnology and complex neurologic diseases, including neurodegenerative dementias, movement, neurovascular, neuroimmune disorders and aging. This individual is expected to establish a robust research program utilizing molecular therapeutic tools to develop therapeutic interventions for neurodegenerative and other complex neurologic disease processes and to take full advantage of the Center for Regenerative Biotherapeutics, Mayo Clinic Innovation Exchange, and Department of Neuroscience research programs at Mayo Clinic.
Candidates are expected to develop a robust nucleotide, small molecule, gene-therapy and/or other modalities-based therapeutic programs. They would provide resources and establish platforms including but not limited to therapeutic design, screening and applications to support existing neuroscience programs for the development of novel therapeutic interventions. In addition to supporting and collaborating with research scientists within the Neuroscience department, the candidate is expected to establish an independent, extramurally funded research program. Finally, the candidate is expected to participate in education and institutional administrative activities. Current or prior experience in Industry or Biotechnology is preferred.
THE DEPARTMENT OF NEUROSCIENCE is internationally recognized for academic excellence with a specific focus on understanding the etiology and developing diagnostic and treatment methods for complex neurologic diseases, including neurodegenerative dementias, movement, neurovascular, neuroimmune disorders and aging. The Department spans all Mayo Clinic sites and includes 28 primary faculty members, 62 allied health staff, 126 postdoctoral associates, and 36 doctoral students. Scientists within the neuroscience department have strong expertise in neurogenomics, neuropathology, disease modeling, molecular and cell biology, immunity, and experimental therapeutics. The Department faculty play key roles in the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and other large-scale NIH-funded consortia. In 2023, the Department of Neuroscience received over $50M in funding, majority of which was from federal grants. Our faculty holds leadership roles on major NIH and foundation programs including but not limited to AMP-AD, CLEAR-AD, Dementia with Lewy Bodies Consortium, Tau Center without walls.
Breakthrough innovation does not just occur on its own. It requires focus, hard work, and being connected to the right people, places, and resources to make it all happen. The Mayo Clinic Innovation Exchange is a platform that supports all these needs, bringing health care entrepreneurs, startups, and industry experts together to bring breakthrough innovations to market. Currently, the Mayo Clinic Innovation Exchange supports over 90 start-ups, all for one shared mission—to benefit patients.
