DRIVER INSTRUCTOR
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, conduct classroom instruction, behind-the-wheel training and on-the-road driving skills evaluation of bus drivers; monitor field operations for safety and service compliance.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Perform classroom, workshop and behind-the-wheel instruction and testing for District School Bus Drivers and Operators of District commercial motor vehicles. E
Perform and document on-the-road driving skills evaluations of School Bus Drivers and Operators of District commercial motor vehicles in compliance with safety practices, departmental policies, State Code and Regulations. E
Maintain records and documentation required by State and/or federal law and prepare appropriate reports. E
Follow and/or monitor bus drivers to determine roadway performance. E
Investigate school bus accidents and other operating incidents involving school buses and respond to staff and public concerns regarding operations safety. E
Identify and communicate with drivers displaying unsatisfactory or marginal skills and recommend remedial actions, equipment restrictions and other corrective measures. E
Perform in-the-field monitoring of fleet operations and service performance. E
Inspect and certify bus stops, loading zones, roadway and bus maneuvering restrictions. E
Develop, demonstrate, supervise, instruct and observe an instructional program to provide safe riding practices evacuations and complete necessary reports and records. E
Establish, maintain and/or support standards of personal conduct and discipline, in accordance with the current discipline policy approved by the Board of Education. E
Drive a school bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging school children.
Screen school bus driver applicants for placement into employment.
Make in-field operational decisions related to safe bus drive practices as necessary.
Assist in the mediation of disputes between drivers, school staff, parents and pupils.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Applicable State and Education Code sections and traffic laws.
Safe driving methods and techniques.
Various mechanical characteristics of buses.
In-field monitoring of fleet operations.
ABILITY TO:
Provide instruction and evaluate on-the-road driving performance of bus drivers.
Learn pertinent District policies, rules and contract specifications.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Exercise sound judgment.
Prepare bus driver training curricula.
Develop and conduct instructional programs and participate in various job related activities, professional growth conferences, workshops and school bus rodeo's.
Train operators of District commercial vehicles.
Check equipment instructions with wheelchairs.
Screen applicant for placement in employment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: five years experience as a school bus driver and one year of which involved transporting handicapped students.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Qualify for and maintain a Commercial Class A or B driver's license with a passenger endorsement.
Qualify for and maintain a California School Bus Driver's Certificate.
Qualify for and maintain a Commercial Driver's License Medical Examination Certificate.
Qualify for a California Department of Education School Bus Driver Instructor Certificate (Candidates do not need to possess this certification at time of application, but will required to obtain one within the first six months of employment.)
