The Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Construction Standards Inspector III, grade A20, in the Office of Storm Drain Maintenance division.
About the Position
This is senior level technical inspection and contract enforcement work to ensure compliance with codes, ordinances, and standards governing construction in specific functional areas (e.g., Tree and Landscape Construction within county right-of-way). Class incumbents read and interpret approved tree / landscape / engineering plans and specifications, conduct field inspections, explain and interpret codes, attempt to obtain voluntary compliance, , write reports and correspondence, gather evidence, prepare cases, and testify in court (if deemed necessary). A significant aspect of the work involves establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with contractors, owners, landscape architects/designers, engineers, and the general public. Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher-level technical supervisor and evaluated based upon effective working relationships and ability to gain compliance with codes, ordinances and standards.
About the Agency
The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County-maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy area -- all of which are maintained by staff of the Department. DPW&T’s workforce keeps the County’s various services moving by performing a myriad of activities which include removing snow and ice from County-maintained roadways, upgrading traffic signals, installing street lights, clearing fallen trees, unclogging drainage inlets and maintaining stormwater management facilities, as well as performing roadway repairs ranging from potholes and sidewalk trip hazards to bridge repairs and resurfacing projects and more.
Examples of Work
Reads, analyzes, and interprets tree/landscape/engineering plans, specifications, and schematics.
Inspects all phases of construction work including excavation, Tree and Landscape Construction within county right-of-way, tree removal, stump grinning, pruning and trimming, in kind concrete repair, stormwater management and drainage-related projects.
Inspects public service requests through PGC311 pertaining to tree installation and removal, concrete, beautification and drainage related matters.
Evaluates and makes recommendations for maintenance, repair or replacement.
Inspects and carefully examines all work performed to specifications and within safety guidelines.
Performs mathematical computations to compute quantities, costs and rates associated with material requirements.
Acts as liaison between other agencies, departments, utilities, elected officials, the general public and the Division.
Serves as primary inspector for the Right Tree Right Place (RTRP) and Median Beautification Programs.
Prepares and submits daily, weekly and monthly reports on contract activities.
Conducts inventory and condition assessments of county tree canopy, concrete and drainage infrastructure.
Identifies locations requiring code enforcement or compliance action.
Ensures that Contractors submit monthly utilization plans and pay-roll reports to ensure County construction contractors’ compliance with the prevailing wage law.
Provides training to subordinate staff members to keep them abreast of new changes, techniques, repairs and procedures and requirements of inspection.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Two (2) years of experience in right-of-way, sediment, grading, erosion, or storm water control.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
A valid Maryland State driver's license is required upon appointment.
