Job Overview:
Newark Beth Israel is seeking a Pediatric hematology Oncology nurse practitioner to join the expanding program. The components of the role include clinical practice, consultation, professional development, program building, education and research in the inpatient and outpatient setting. The Pediatric hematology-oncology APP provides care and management for patients with cancer and blood disorders in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team with an increased level of accountability. A wide degree of patient care autonomy/latitude and care coordination is expected for these medically fragile patients.
APN responsibilities within the scope include history and physical exam, prescribing chemotherapy agents, symptom management, patient education and referrals. Independence with some invasive procedures required-training will be provided where clinically necessary. Effectively identify, evaluate, and address disease prevention and health promotion issues while administering quality patient care is required. The Pediatric APP also serves as clinical leader and educator for both medical and nursing staff, providing mentorship for both in-house resident physicians and RNs. The APN will be expected to take responsibility for the enhancement of his or her own professional development and participate in local, regional and national committees with the focus of improving care of children with cancer and blood disorders.
Schedule will be majority daytime hours. Primary location will be in Newark NJ. Extended coverage to additional hospitals within the RWJBarnabas Health System and outpatient clinical sites will be determined at the discretion of pediatric leadership.
Qualifications:
- Current New Jersey Registered Nurse License,
- Current New Jersey Advanced Practiced Nursing License
- Master s degree in pediatric or family nursing with prescriptive privileges
- 2+ years of related clinical experience preferred acute care nursing
- Related national NP certification
- BLS certification
- PALS certification
- APHON chemotherapy certified
- CPHON preferred
Scheduling Requirements:
- Full Time
- Majority Day
- 37.5 hours
Essential Functions:
- Performing daily rounds and follow-up on patients admitted to the pediatric hematology oncology service in conjunction with collaborating physicians
- Assessing the health status of patients by means of comprehensive health history and physical examination
- Ordering laboratory, radiological, and diagnostic studies per treatment protocols and differentiating between normal abnormal findings and altering the plan of care according to collaborative practice agreement
- Prescribing medications including chemotherapy drugs, medications for sickle cell disease and other complex hematological disorders, supportive care medications, medical devices, and other therapeutics within NJ and Federal scope of practice law for nurse practitioners
- Providing education to pediatric hematology-oncology patients and their families regarding the treatment plan
- Using evidence based guidelines to advise and support appropriate practice changes for the pediatric hematology oncology patient population
- Working collaboratively with nursing and pharmacy leadership to ensure timely communication of chemotherapy treatment plan and infusion schedule
- Developing and revising nursing standards and patient and family education materials as relevant to area of practice
- Advocating for patients/families and supporting patients rights
- Performing all other duties as assigned
