THE POSITION
Adminsitrative Intern - Fire Department

The Fire Department, Emergency Preparedness Division, seeks a part-time intern who will be responsible for providing administrative and technical assistance in emergency planning, emergency operations, communications, and community preparedness.
Administrative Intern projects and essential duties include:
Assist with coordinating with inter-departmental staff and external agencies to develop and update city-wide emergency management plans and policies.
Participate in planning and executing training programs, exercises and emergency operations drills to prepare city departments to effectively respond to emergencies.
Conduct research regarding emergency management programs and best practices for inclusion in emergency and disaster management plans.
Develop public informational materials and assist with conducting public education presentations on emergency management programs.
Assist with tracking and monitoring budget allocations and expenditures and participate in the preparation of grant document submissions.
Assist with establishing timelines and processes to track and monitor projects and the accomplishment of key objectives.
Tasks may also include assisting staff in day-to-day operations, filing, organizing, report writing, participating in meetings, and answering phone inquiries. Interns will have the opportunity to work independently and collaboratively to develop skills that are imperative for success in the field of Emergency Management.
Minimum Qualifications:
Internship positions are best suited for undergraduates, graduate students, or recent graduates with a background in emergency management, homeland security, public safety, public administration, public relations, or communications. The ideal candidate will possess a strong interest in the field of emergency management.
Knowledge of National Incident Management System (NIMS), Standardized Emergency Management System (SEMS), Incident Command System (ICS), and Emergency Operations Center (EOC) operations and/or activations.
Good organizational skills, work experience using software programs, e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, etc., and excellent oral and written communication skills.
The goal of this position is to prepare the individual for a career in the field of emergency management. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in gaining hands-on experience in emergency management at the City level.
This is a non-benefited position, working up to (30) hours per week, with flexible hours between Monday - Friday, 7:30 am – 5:30 pm.
EXAMINATION PROCEDURES
Only the most qualified candidates will be invited to advance to the next stage in the recruitment process, which will consist of an oral appraisal interview with the Fire Department
