The University of Virginia is a highly competitive Division I program committed to academic and athletic excellence. The Department of Athletics at the University of Virginia is now accepting applications for the position of Shop Technician to support the Facilities and Game Operations office.
Shop Technicians perform various service duties regarding the maintenance and care of athletic buildings and grounds. They may be certified in a skill area or could be experienced in working with several unlicensed and unspecialized crafts. They may work independently or as a team, with assigned work but limited supervision.
The Shop Technician supports the athletics department goals of providing consistent, cost effective, and reliable maintenance and service to the athletics facilities and providing safe working conditions for shop staff. The Shop Technician will provide first class service and operation for internal and external constituents with the expectation for high performance standards and will perform or call for repairs that pose an immediate threat to health or safety (informing supervisor, as necessary). This position will help with various projects, event set ups and conversions and reports to the Shop Supervisor or, in their absence, the Assistant Shop Supervisor.
Incumbent must be able to: operate hand and power tools; perform maintenance and repair equipment; understand instructions and work independently without direct supervision but know when to ask for assistance; perform manual labor; learn new skills and adapt procedures, techniques, tools, materials and/or equipment to meet special needs.
Basic computer skills and Microsoft Office. Knowledge of daily computer use for email communication, researching maintenance topics and materials online, scheduling work, and reviewing and managing work orders and daily time entries.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or Equivalent Required
An Associate's, Bachelor's, or technical school certificate is preferred.
Some related experience in grounds keeping, machine maintenance, and general labor services required.
Must be 18 years of age or older to operate rental equipment such as a bobcat, loaders and other heavy equipment. Valid Virginia driver's license required.
Physical Demands:
Employee will be required to crawl, kneel, squat, bend and twist in order to perform their work. Employee must walk around job sites. Employee will work with materials of different weights and perform repetitive motions.

The salary for this position is $16.25/hour commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a full-time, benefits and overtime eligible position. Employees’ benefits package highlights include:
