Description
Under general supervision, performs various maintenance and repair projects within County buildings and facilities.
Shift: Mon – Fri, 7a – 3:30p, other hours as job requires

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Responds in a timely manner to work requests under guidance as needed;
Cleans internal areas of buildings, including buffing, dusting, sweeping and mopping;
Paints interior and exterior walls and trim;
Cleanse, repairs and paints exterior building components, to include parking lots and other areas as needed.
Performs routine maintenance duties such as moving office furniture and records, hanging office pictures, replacing light bulbs, unloading and loading office supplies;
Provides other maintenance as necessary, including, but not limited to, plumbing and electrical systems;
During the first 72 hours following a disaster, remains ready and available for on-site response.
Other duties as requested and assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education, Experience and Training Guidelines: High school diploma or equivalent; knowledge of hand tools, power tools; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
Knowledge of:
Basic methods, techniques, principles and practices used in the building trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, heating, air conditioning and general construction;
Design, construction and maintenance of public facilities;
Materials and equipment used in construction and maintenance projects;
Commercial construction and remodeling methods and practices;
Metal stud and drywall installation methods and techniques;
Safety rules and regulations;
Building and ADA codes;
Department policies, procedures and regulations covering specific areas of assignment.
Skill in:
Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing;
Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with managers, supervisors, employees, external public agencies, suppliers, vendors and contractors;
Using initiative, discretion and decision making within established procedures, guidelines and rules;
Defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts and drawing valid conclusions;
Interpreting technical instructions in various forms and dealing with abstract and concrete variables;
Performing mathematical calculations with skill and accuracy, and maintaining electronic records and files;
Operating various motorized vehicles and equipment;
Operating various hand and power tools, block pane, trenching machine, combination square, hammer, jack, hoe, shovel, router, chain saw, electric drills, sanders, joiner, planer, bits, miter saw, tape measure, coping saw, level, circular saw, pry bar, chisels, hand saw, hole saw, sheep’s foot, saber saw brace, knife, ruler, etc.;
Reading and understanding blueprints and technical manuals;
Meeting critical time deadlines;
Providing effective customer service;
Operating a personal computer and various software applications.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Valid Texas Driver's License. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed both in an indoor and outdoor work environment. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. May be required to climb ladders and perform work at high locations. May be exposed to excessive noise levels, dangerous machinery, high, precarious places, risk of electrical shock, vibration, extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases. May be required to wear safety glasses. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
