The Manager, Leave & Disability Management leads the team to support our employees through some of the most vulnerable points in their career. The team will ensure that our leave and disability programs are built seamlessly and focus on reliable execution. The leader also ensures that programs are cost effective and in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations. Manages the leave of absence team and support workers’ compensation function and directs the day-to-day operation of programs.
Provides mentoring, coaching, direction, support and guidance to team
Responsible for the overall effectiveness of leave and supports workers’ compensation operations including knowledge of best practices in process, technology and system solutions for leave operations. Drives continuous improvement around leave and workers’ compensation operation, working closely with partners inside and outside of HR to optimize process design and improve employee experience.
Leads the design and coordination of processes for leave, disability and absence management programs to ensure appropriate risk management, cost control and adherence to the law. Develops metrics to measure program success and implements regular reporting for operations.
Oversees the technical duties related to employee disability management, including supporting Workers’ Compensation administration, absence tracking, modified duty, reasonable accommodation, FML and return-to-work programs. Works to continuously improve processes to ensure the most efficient and efficient and effective approach to disability management.
Meets regularly with managers, labor relations and employee relations to develop sound strategies for a mutually beneficial resolution to workforce management.
Stays abreast of trends and innovations in the field of Leaves of Absence and Workers’ Compensation; keeps current on legislative and regulatory issues at the State and Federal level (FMLA, Pregnancy Discrimination Act, ADA, TDI, LTD, Sick Leave Laws, etc.) also taking into consideration the provisions of the various collective bargaining agreements.
Manages the external vendors to ensure proper coordination of activity between HA and the vendor(s); works with insurance broker to identify best practice approaches to lower cost overall.
Provides support to managers in implementing and monitoring lost time initiatives at the operational level.
Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department and assumes other responsibilities, duties, tasks and assignments that contribute to the mitigation or response to any public health emergency
Supervisory Responsibilities
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning reviewing and directing work; evaluating and appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Makes hiring decisions and designs individual development plans with succession planning in mind for all key roles.
Education/Experience/Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or Healthcare is required
- Six (6) years of related experience in leave of absence administration and disability accommodations inclusive of three (3) years of supervisory experience is required.
- Related, relevant, and/or direct experience may be considered in lieu of minimum educational requirements indicated above.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of disability management, return-to-work strategies, Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) and related state and local statutes.
- Demonstrated experience working in a Healthcare environment with a high volume of accommodation cases.
- Ability to analyze, problem solve, organize, and manage multiple priorities, and effectively follow up in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to build and maintain effective professional relationships through strong interpersonal skills including consistent demonstration of solid professional judgement.
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities, including effective presentation skills at all levels of the enterprise including technical language with representatives from the Legal team.
- Able to provide exceptional customer service by exhibiting a high sense of urgency, exceptional follow-up, and follow-through.
- Must have meticulous attention to detail, critical thinking skills, and the willingness to accept constructive feedback.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment.
- Ability to examine documents for accuracy and completeness.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
- Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports and/or presentations.
- Solid skills in Microsoft Office programs, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook.
