Biotechnology is rewriting life as we know it, from the medicines we take, to the crops we grow, the materials we wear, and the household goods that we rely on every day. But moving at the new speed of science requires better technology.
Benchling’s mission is to unlock the power of biotechnology. The world’s most innovative biotech companies use Benchling’s R&D Cloud to power the development of breakthrough products and accelerate time to milestone and market.
Come help us bring modern software to modern science.
ROLE OVERVIEW
As a Software Engineer working on the Domain Graph and API team, you’ll build foundational technologies relied on by our customers’ engineers and other engineers at Benchling. Benchling is a system of record for our customers so our developer platform is a key component of our product strategy. Over 80% of our customers use custom built software in the critical path of their business processes and that software is powered by the APIs that this team owns!
It’s also essential to our customers’ success that those APIs have full coverage and consistent behavior and this team also builds tools and systems to make it easy for Benchling application engineers to add their products to those APIs. This work has tremendous leverage because we’re blazing a path for other horizontal platform systems to follow as they also look to improve the ergonomics of integrating new products with their systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own projects end-to-end, from initial design, to prototype, to large-scale rollout.
- Consult with application teams on the design of their domain model and public APIs.
- Help build the primitives of a durable data platform that application teams rely on.
- Work hand-in-hand with product managers and fellow engineers to understand needs and shape them into scalable software solutions.
- Ensure high quality and performance of our systems through comprehensive testing, monitoring, and optimization.
- Mentor other engineers and be a multiplier across the team.
- Drive the evolution of our product and team. As a member of the engineering team, you will be an integral part of how we mature our tooling, engineering processes, and hiring.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Have 4+ years of experience in software engineering, ideally in a platform team.
- Build software with a product-first approach. You ship code quickly and care about the real world impact of your code.
- Have strong abilities in problem solving and iterating on feedback.
- Enjoy ownership and building key pieces of product and platform
- Have a keen interest in delving deeper into building Enterprise SaaS in the life sciences industry. While prior knowledge isn’t a prerequisite, an enthusiasm to learn certainly is!
Check out our engineering blog for some examples of past work throughout Benchling. Here are some other examples of recent and future projects for the Domain Graph and API team:
- Domain Graph Versioning: We have a “Domain Graph” that is our source of truth for the domain model of Benchling. Another team is building a Change Data Capture (CDC) system that will represent changes with the Domain Graph representation of the data. To make that work, we needed to let the CDC system subscribe to changes in the Domain Graph itself so it can update how to represent those models.
- V3 REST API Release: We are currently preparing to release an updated version of our public REST API that not only will have more features but will also have better consistency and coverage than the current version, V2. This version is built from the ground up using the Domain Graph as the source of truth which will mean that the V3 REST API implementation can be mostly autogenerated.
- Performance improvements: For other internal systems to use the Domain Graph as their source of truth for data, they use a persistence agnostic internal API that we also own that we call Data Connectors. We’re working on a project now that finds seams between that API and other systems in Benchling and prevents over-fetching by introducing new tooling that automatically translates queries between, e.g. an internal GraphQL API and Data Connectors.
