Minimum Position Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a natural science, engineering, or closely related field and 5 years of experience in laboratory safety or a related safety field. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Special Conditions
The department is especially interested in candidates that have completed 40 hours HAZWOPER training or be able to complete training within 1 year of employment. The department would also prefer the successful candidate to be a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, Certified Biological Safety Professional, or hold a similar nationally recognized professional certification.

Working Conditions
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to handle or feel, and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee is occasionally required to stand, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
Additional Working Conditions
Must be able to enter potentially hazardous environments; wear a respirator and other personal protective equipment; ascend and descend ladders and stairs; lift and carry up to 45 pounds unassisted.
The Laboratory Safety Manager may be exposed to outside weather conditions, noise, mechanical, electrical, thermal, biological, chemical, fire, radiation, and other hazards.
May be required to be on call to respond to emergencies.

Develops and delivers tailored training programs for personnel of various educational backgrounds that access laboratory spaces including lab workers and maintenance personnel. Serves as the university biological safety officer, laser safety officer and associate radiation safety officer.
Duties & Responsibilities
Performs inspections of laboratories and other facilities that us hazardous materials. Develops or assists in developing and maintaining databases of laboratory inspections and hazardous materials. Analyzes data to assess the levels of risks, guide audits and inspections, create warning signs and placards, prescribe training and prescribe corrective actions. Administers software systems for compliance tracking and risk reduction. Performs or ensure performance of periodic testing of laboratory safety equipment including laboratory exhaust devices, safety showers and eyewashes.

Ensures calibration and performance of complex instrumentation. Assists in execution of radiation dosimetry program, monitoring personnel exposure to ionizing radiation, performs radioisotope contamination surveys, performs in vitro and in vivo personnel bio-assays; calibrates, or ensures calibration of, radiation detection instruments; collaborates in implementation of radiation safety program through audits, records of inventories, receipt, and disposal of radioactive materials, coordinating disposal of radioactive waste; maintains records required by federal and state laws/regulations.

Manages the university biological waste program. Receives waste requests and collects upon request. Negotiates university contract for biological waste services. Responds to hazardous materials spills, explosions, fires, and similar events; assesses risks to lives, facilities, and the environment; takes appropriate action to minimize losses and liability exposure; remediates hazardous materials releases; directs contractors re-mediating hazardous materials incidents; trains others to respond appropriately to such events; provides guidance to emergency responders; initiates reports of chemical releases in compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
